Rain spoils fun...but not as much as the guy at the desk.

First all, sorry to all who got short changed by the bad weather as there ended up being a lot of walkover semis and finals and of course consolation was cancelled.

Second, what is with the guy behind the desk at Lee Leclear? He is the rudest tournament volunteer I have ever dealt with in many, many year of playing tennis around the state. HTA should think about how it looks when you have someone being rude to basically every player or parent that approaches the desk. Not exactly good word of mouth to get other out of towners to come in to play Fall Fest.

Finally, congrats to all the winners and finalists, including:

Femi Thomas, who beat Will Taylor in the Open Finals
Odion Dibua, who beat Greg Schmucker in the 4.5 Finals
Brian Goldberg, who beat someone to win the 4.0 Finals

Maybe Brian would have gotten more poll votes if the tourney had happened last weekend.

Unfortunately, the 4.5 doubles fell apart at the end, as the matchup between Dibua/Moser and Kallus/Tass never materialized, I assume due to the weather pushing things over to Monday. Still curious as to whether there was a falling out between Kallus and Moser since those guys had been playing as a team all year and signed up with different partners. Plus, last I looked, neither had signed up yet for the master's cup. Anyone know anything?

Moser moving to France next month is probably why they aren't playing the masters cup.

why France?

If there were more people volunteering to help out just once in awhile then we wouldn't have people like him behind the desk. Obvoiusly there is not much of a volunteer pool to choose from. In addition, people need to email/call the HTA to let them know of any specific altercations with him so they have some basis for removal.BTW, I agree with you about him.

The big dude behind the tournament desk at Lee LeClear thinks he is funny. I feel sorry for him.

It is completely unacceptable for the guy to roll his eyes in disgust or annoyance everytime someone asks a question while checking in or reporting a score. He makes Harriet look like a complete sweetheart and she was one tough cookie behind the desk.

Harriet was very respectful and courteous when I talked with her.

His name is Gary Lemp and he is friends with David Hall. Enough said.

I think he just needs to come out of the closet. Then he'll be a happier person.

Jochen's exhausted the Houston hardcourt tennis scene. Therefore, he's moving to France in time for the clay court season to begin. Don't worry, he'll be back...

how about the 5.0 draw?

Anonymous said...

is there a reason you left out the 5.0 in your comments?

As of the time that I wrote the post yesterday, the 5.0 results were not reported. I know Amit Garg was up 6-4 after one set against Rich as of the time play stopped on Sunday. The 5.0 draw was quite strong with Amit, Rich, and Gary Armstrong all playing.

Surprising to me that Green, Morton, and Hunckler did not play. Bobo was in the draw, but pulled out before the draws posted.

Pop Quiz!!!

We defaulted to the Taylor team in the semis of the open mixed because of the Monday schedule. The Taylor team won the open mixed without ever playing a point. Do they receive ranking points for the tournament?

It is the "bad luck" of the draw in this case to be the number 1 seed and to have a bye, because I believe you need to have at least a 0:0 Ret(inj) or so to get points.

The opposite happened in the 4.5 mixed draw where a team without a bye ended up winning the whole thing with 3 walkovers.

Pretty sure Garg took out Ryu 6-4 6-4 in the end...

It's too bad that the only two HTA sponsored tourneys for the year (Gallery and Fall Fest) had rain delays and messed up the tournaments. Wished Houston's parks would have some covered courts.

Gary Lemp is the rudest person you would ever meet. He has no business working with the public. He is also not as good a tennis player as he thinks he is.

Harriet was tough because she needed to be but mostly fair. Nobody ran a tournament better than her and she was a nice person. She will be missed in Houston tennis.

Since David Hall quit as team cpt. and singles league player maybe he has some free time to help out running the check in desk with gary Lemp.

Any comments about Moser's Houston City tournament that starts today out at Memorial Park?

Interesting that Bryan Wooten, former number one junior in Texas and player at Texas A&M is signed up. Hard to see him having too much trouble in open.

Here some results from the Houston City Challenge:

Men's Open Singles Winner: Bryan Wooten over Arun Nanjappa
Men's 4.5 Singles Winner: Pete Tass over Ronnie Johnson
Men's 4.0 Singles Winner: Ismael Dutchover over Tuyen Nguyen
Men's 4.0 Doubles: Luis Lemus & Derik Crosser over Dutchover & Nguyen

Anyone know why Moser is completely removed from the 4.5 singles rankings? I understand he has moved to another Country, but so did Curtis Simms and his points remained on the list until time removed them.
