Countdown to the Magic Show (Weak David Copperfield Reference)

You guys are getting chatty again. Yesterday was the biggest post day since the day before the Gallery Furniture (1st time I have not called it the Coke). And really, no is even be that mean either. So good job. It is quite a strong tourney this weekend, especially the 4.5 draw. 4.0 would have been impressive as well if Foad Ansari and Eddie Janek had played this one instead of the exhibition event going on on the other side of town. There should definitely be some good matches this weekend. Not to discount Mike Salinas cause he is a solid player, but if Greg Schmucker wins that match I certainly hope he does show up to play Knutson, assuming again that Knutson wins. Listen to me, I sound like Dinker with all my matter of fact predictions. That being said, I do agree with the poll that Red Benzon should be the favorite to win. I am surprised that he is playing a 4.5 tournament. Guess he wanted to shut some of the people up who are always attacking him on the league blog. Anyway, good luck to him, if the weather cooperates and he can take the wear and tear of multiple matches, he definitely has the game to beat this weekend. 5.0 is what it is and none of the guys who signed up for it should be spoken of poorly. Several of the 4.5 entrants should have joined them in the 5.0 draw. Red Benzon, Herb Morton, Greg Schmucker, David McMullan, to name an obvious few. Like I said, it is what it is. Everyone enjoy and try to lay off the beer until after your singles matches. Doubles players, feel free to drink up all you like cause no one cares. Just joking.

How many different computers is Red going to vote from? Just kidding, Red would be the favorite in my book too. If Morton is playing well, he is always a threat to anyone.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Eddie and Foad are scared to play a sanctioned tournament so they do not get the loss on their record.

Anonymous said...

I will not even drop a set. I will win the 4.5 draw easily and shut up those who are talking trash about me.

Red

Anonymous said...

Lets hope so since you play more tennis than anybody in Houston.

Anonymous said...

Hell Red you will not only lose a set, but collapse with a heart attack once the temp hits above 80 degrees.

It's funny you are playing 4.5 instead of 5.0 what a sandbagger. You know its not doubles either which sucks for you since all you're partners have to carry you. Carry you on the court that is not on their shoulders cause damn you are one heavy dude.

Anonymous said...

Benzon is only good when he plays 4.5 league doubles with a 5.5 partner.

Anonymous said...

Funny I haven't posted yet but somebody is already using my name. I plan to do okay but not win any matches in straight sets. And to anyone that thinks I need to be carried in doubles ask any of my partners if they need to carry me. i can Hold my own on the Doubles Court for sure. And to the person that thinks I'm sandbagging by playing 4.5's look at the draw 4.5 is stronger than 5.0's pls do your player research better.

Allen Tran was bragging that he can't win with you but always wins against you.

Anonymous said...

Alain Tran is a tool.

Anonymous said...

whos the bigger tool, red or alain?

Anonymous said...

Have to go with alain here. The guy seriously injured somebody at a league match, can't say Benzon has ever done anything that bad.

Anonymous said...

Who is the bigger tool? Foad or Kallus?

Anonymous said...

That one is a pretty close call. on the one hand, you have Kallus, who if the net is one millimeter too high, or the court is uneven by an inch, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The theres Foad, who will call anything you hit thats even remotely close to the line out, then you call one of his shots thats a foot long out and he cries and calls you a cheater. At the end of the day though have to go with Kallus. Is there a bigger tool in the existence of the universe than him? Doubtful.

Anonymous said...

id say Red is the biggest cheater. he wants to win so badly that he doesnt realize ultimately it contributes to his many losses.

Anonymous said...

What makes Red a cheater?

Anonymous said...

Question why does Knutson make a really retarded face when he plays tennis?

Anonymous said...

Probably the same reason most tennis players do when they strike the ball. Look at the professional players, some look a little lost when they are striking the ball.

Anonymous said...

You guys are bunch of ruthless SOBs as far as putting down people like Kallus, Foad, Red, and now Knutson. I like that.

Anonymous said...

Foad is the biggest on-court jackass. Knutson is the biggest off-court jackass.

Anonymous said...

Watch out for dark horse David Guy to thrash Red in 2nd round and for Red to stop voting for himself

Anonymous said...

David Guy and Ricardo Martinez should have a nice first round match. Either of them could push Red in the 2nd round.

Anonymous said...

Will Kelly Ward make a strong showing? He has to play some former Greek Davis Cup player in the 1st round.

Anonymous said...

David Guy wasn't in the draw originally. How did he get in there?

Anonymous said...

Actually Red's Backhand and Forehand both suck so he shouldn't get past the 1st round but should do okay in consolation.

Anonymous said...

Anyone find it curious that David Guy not only magically shows up in the draw the day after it is posted but also happens to find himself set up for a 2nd round match with Red Benzon. Terminator IV - Guy is sent back to make sure that Red doesn't run through the 4.5 draw. Bonus to spectators since they get to see a really high quality 5.0 match...too bad it is in the 2nd round of 4.5. Of course David Guy has lost to JR Pogue before, so maybe I should not be giving him too much credit.

Anonymous said...

My two cents:

--ballesteros is not a 5.0 player. definitely couldn't win @ 4.5 either. must be an ego thing.
--knutson is good with playing trash tennis, but if you can't beat that, then maybe you should move down to 4.0
--morton you're an above average 4.5 player, so glad to see that you're playing in the 4.5 instead of 5.0.
--schmucker's forehand and backand are top notch, but his net play and approach is a mediocre 4.0 level
--red should learn how to hit a top spin backhand.

Anonymous said...

Red will have a tough 2nd and 3rd round match and if he wins, should easily win the rest of the way. that quarter of the draw is the hardest.

Anonymous said...

Revised picks for Copperfield:

Men's Open - B. Smith
Men's 5.0 - J. Patch
Men's 4.5 - David "Super" Guy
Men's 4.0 - James "Hurricane" Rice
Men's 3.5 - %#&?@*%

How did David Guy magically showed up in the draw the day after it was posted???

Anonymous said...

Journeyman, Justine Henin at the tender age of 25 quits tennis with 7 majors and $20 million in the bank. I think I'm gonna be sick with all them bitches making all that doe and quitting tennis so young!

Anonymous said...

Hunter Emmott is going to be pretty tough to beat in open.

Anonymous said...

Watchout Houston league tennis: there is a captain in town figuring a way to get Henin rated 4.0 or 4.5 for their team next year.

Anonymous said...

David Guy is a quality player.

Scanning his USTA record, he normally plays Open and is no slouch. He has beaten some pretty good players, but he has also has lost to numerous 4.5s.

With regards to people within this draw, his records shows he has beaten Schmucker and Morales. It also shows he as lost to McMullan and Morton. FWIW, he has split with Green.

Has a great chance to do well as do numerous others in the 4.5 draw.

Anonymous said...

David Guy had a very close match with Schmucker so that does not mean that much. Also Guy has been playing golf all the time and has not been playing tennis at all. So don't expect too much from him in this tournament.

Anonymous said...

BS, David Guy plays tennis all the time he plays on one or two league teams.

I am glad to see some of these players who think they are open players and they would dominate the 4.5s.

Let's see how good David Guy, in my opinion he is finally playing in the appropriate level 4.5 not open.

Make sure you don't bring hot chicks out to watch your match with David Guy because you will lose no matter who you are. To beat him, just tell him his website has a virus at the top of the screen.

Anonymous said...

What is his website? I can have some signs printed.

Anonymous said...

lol...Dude you are killing me.

Anonymous said...

We can stand behind his court with the signs...YOUR WEBSITE IS CORRUPT!!!!

Anonymous said...

Then I will stand behind Red with a sign...

$4.99 ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET

Anonymous said...

How about one for Kallus...

IS THE NET TOO HIGH?

or

WHERE IS THE WIND COMING FROM?

Anonymous said...

Here's one for Sarosh...

THAT BALL WAS IN, BUT I'LL CALL IT OUT.

Anonymous said...

You must be mistaken about that "former Greek Davis Cup" player. There was a Leonidas a long time ago but this one I hate to inform you is just "Andy". He sucks and he probably will play with 10 different racquets during a 30 minute thrashing cause he doesn't want to break his 20th century racquets. Plus he is injured, overweight, and did I mention he sucks.

Anonymous said...

OMG I hate it when these 4.0 guys waste the Open players time. Go Hit against the ball machine until u get better before u step on the open court.

Anonymous said...

Agree but is everyone playing at their appropriate level- NO. Look at the NTRP descriptions and you'll see no one is playing at their correct level. If a player wants to play up and get thrashed oh well. Playing down is BS.

Anonymous said...

Yeah open is exactly that, open. Nowhere does it say only 5.5 and above players are allowed only. I agree that what is much worse is what you get in league where the infamous teams have everyone one or two levels above. I know lots of people that wont do league because of the tanking and sandbagging. So if someone wants to play open to get a straight up high level match, more power to them.

Anonymous said...

If Schmucker wins his 1st match and Knutson wins his 1st match look to see Schmuker bails out in their quaterfinals match-up. Knutson would get to the semifinals with a bye in the quaters. I'm just stating the fact about the outcome tomorrow!

Anonymous said...

My ball machine broke so I wanted to get two lessons for like $30.

Anonymous said...

The polls are getting close for the Copperfield 4.5 draw. Benzon must have run out of computers to vote from.

Anonymous said...

Knutson is a joke and why would anyone think he's a contender.

Anonymous said...

Knutson sure talks alot of trash for a below average 4.5 player.

Anonymous said...

Ask the blogger, he put his name in the poll.

Anonymous said...

Knutson has an effective game by playing Santoro type tennis. Basically boring the hell out of the other player. I think in order to beat him you need to come into the net and take it too him. Any thoughts on that?

Anonymous said...

I like watching Knutson play. He actually thinks out there. There is much more to tennis then big top-spin groundstrokes. He is not flashy but he is effective.

Anonymous said...

I have played Knutson more than once, and beaten him each time. Be aggressive and move forward, do not let his junk balls pin you on baseline.

Anonymous said...

if you lose to knutson, you should be playing 4.0.

Brandon Halm said...

Wow...! How come the Halm only got 3 votes...!! I look forward to playing Knutson one day....I love the Santoro types....they do think a lot on the court but solid groundies and net pressure will always beat them....!

Anonymous said...

hey halm--youre the biggest cheeseball out there.

Anonymous said...

Halm, don't worry too much about Knutson, your game would take him easily. your toughest match will be against Guy or Benzon. if you win that, you should be able to win tourney.

Brandon Halm said...

Watch out.....I am coming into form this weekend....! Thunderous serve......devestating forehand......unbelievable backhand.....solid net game.....amazing mental skills....they are all coming together this weekend......if you beat me you will win the tournament....

Anonymous said...

That Brandon Helm guy sounds pretty good with all those weapons. How many tourneys has he won? Semms like he should be easy winner and should be playing up if all those come together on a consistent basis.

Prediction: Guy runs "big Red" around court and wins in straight sets,

Anonymous said...

That 4.0 guy played Ward a decent match for a 4.0. He lost 2 and 1 but he seemed to be in just about every game. I think he could do half way decent at 4.5.

Anonymous said...

No surprises today. Some good matchups to tomorrow. Schmucker-Salinas, and Guy-Benzon should be good matches. Then hopefully Schmucker will show up to play Knutsen.

Anonymous said...

Took Guy 3 sets to pull off the come behind victory against "Big Red". Then Guy made "devestating forehand" Brandon Halm quit. (Down 6-2, 5-1 (ret.) what a joke)Knutson ripped apart Greg Schmuckernburger. Knutson (5th seed) vs unseeded Guy in a heated Sunday 8am match. I say Knutson cause Guy is probably out drinking and hittin on some "hot" chics tonight.....lol

Anonymous said...

Yup Guy was by the keg at 9:59 pm picking up at the Hot Chicks at Copperfield or marketing his cool website. Either way he should still come out victorious against "Cut the Ball Nutson".my pick is Super Dave all the way to save the Day!!!!

Anonymous said...

Did Copperfield hire some hot chicks to come in? Never seen any there in my previous tournaments there.

Brandon Halm said...

Indeed....I did not complete the match. This Guy character played some solid tennis....our 3:00 "start time" turned into a 2 hour rain delay...!!! So we hit the court at 5:00 and then at 6:30 when it was 6-2, 5-1....the rain came down again.....we left the court and I wasn't in the mood to wait 3 more hours......Been at copperfield since 9:00 A.M.......there is partying to do in Houston.

Anonymous said...

Greg lol!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

In defense of Schmucker the second set he rushed thru the entire set because he needed to head out to Rosenberg for a charity event. Schmucker was even coming to the net to end the points. Had Greg won the second he was going to have to retire anyways to leave for Rosenberg.

I really thought Schmucker was a class act giving up his time at the tournament to help out a charity event for children.

Anonymous said...

How about Goldberg destroying Morton. That has to be the upset of the tournament.

Anonymous said...

That Brian Goldberg dude must be a really good player, he should be playing 5.0.

Anonymous said...

how would goldberg really do in 5.0? how many 5.0's could beat him, only 5 or so i'd say.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm, that couldn't be Goldberg tootin his own horn could it? Speakin of Horn, good job Brian on your revenge victory on Thursday night against that 65 yr old. Guy had to sober up and win in three again this morning. Hopefully he's not too tired in the finals.

Anonymous said...

Morton played like crap, but give credit to Brian. Guy won the 4.5's.

Anonymous said...

Don't think anyone can stop Lord of the Strings. He's got some big game that he can back up from all over the court. I'd like to see the Tim Green play him. I think his Nose ring definitely intimidates his opponents plus the fact he has some of the nastiest drop shots I've ever seen.

Anonymous said...

Who the f**k is Lord of The Strings?

Anonymous said...

The real players will run that fat bastard all over the court till he coughs up a lung. he's good though and whoever beats him will work.

Anonymous said...

Well at least Red won 4.5 Mixed doubles.

Anonymous said...

Wonder who can beat Reader in Waco, any takers?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I will do it. I will beat Reader.

The real answer is no one, unless Amit Garg or Brian Smith decide to go up and play Waco 5.0. It won't be Tim and it won't be Gound.

Anonymous said...

Do you really think Garg Can beat Reader?I mean we all know Garg is really good,But Reader?I dont think so.

Anonymous said...

How could Knutson kill Greg soo badly?

Anonymous said...

Knutson is the real challenger to Reader. I pick Knutson is straight sets.

Anonymous said...

Dude,I SERIOUSLY hope you are joking about Knutson and Reader.Their not even comparable.Besides Losing to Smith,Reader has some very impressive results.Reader could end up #1 in 5.0s. And Knutson played 4.0s last year!So Im going to assume your joking,Or youve been smoking too much shit with Reader himself!

Anonymous said...

Well being that Garg has not traveled in the past, its probably a mute point. If Kyle Texas is near Waco, Brian Smith will probably play. However, he probably belongs in Open anyway.

Anonymous said...

yo!not a lot of entries in the 5.0 in waco!wonder if alfonso or solis are planning on playing.

Anonymous said...

Brian Smith lives in Houston now. He is the new head pro at Copperfield Racquet Club as of 3 weeks ago. Doesn't mean he won't go to Waco. He just doesn't live in Kyle anymore. If Alfonso or Leonardo make the drive to Waco, which I doubt, they will more than likely play 4.5 not 5.0, even though I agree Alfonso's game belongs in 5.0.

Anonymous said...

Reader, Houston guys wait til 11:59pm the night of the deadline, and since it extended to 5/22 dont expect much activity til then. You will have no clue who you will be playing til then.

Anonymous said...

Another Sa-roach is lurking among us. The dude’s name is Roberto Narajos and he totally made Copperfield 4.0 players his bitches. Dude if you are blowing everyone 6-0, 6-1 then you don’t need to be playing in 4.0s. He also won Gallery Furniture tourney (aka Coke Open). Unfortunately, he only plays the local tourneys and is not under the radar. USTA needs to tell this prick to move up to 4.5 like the roach did.

Anonymous said...

Reader and Knutson will be a good match. People continue to underestimate Knutson.

Anonymous said...

Knutsin does not belong on the same court as the Lord unless of course he was bringing him water or picking up the balls!

Anonymous said...

The Roach got bumped up and got scared of the competition. the roach is nowhere to be seen

Anonymous said...

Dude, Lord of the Stings, Thomas Reader would kill Knutson. You must be smoking what Reader smokes.

Anonymous said...

Waco looks like small draws all around. Any H-town folks planning on making the trip? Don't the 4.5s and 5.0s usually play at Waco Regional Tennis Center (the nice place)?

Anonymous said...

I bet $$$ Knutsen ends up at the big 8 tournament in 4.5 singles at the end of the year. He can beat all the average players and can really confuse the better players (Solis and Schmucker).

Like most of us, he can't compete with Reader though.

Anonymous said...

NO F#CKING WAY he makes Austin!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Reader would kill Knutson 6-0, 6-0.

Anonymous said...

Knutson will hack his way to Austin if he plays most of the majors and does well at Sectionals like he did last year.

Anonymous said...

Can't argue with that point dude!

Anonymous said...

Garg and Smith are the ones who could beat Reader almost definitely. The others will have a tough time, but Dibua versus Reader would be agood match. cant say for sure who would win that.

Anonymous said...

Reader has talent, but not much of a head game when the rallys are intense. Did you all forget his loss to Trautman on the order of 6-2, 6-0? And his multiple losses to Brunsman, who is really good, but beatible.

Anonymous said...

How about this poll journeyman:

Dibua versus Reader?

Anonymous said...

which dibua? im guessing odion since he plays 5.0

Anonymous said...

I saw Reader play Trautman and I saw Reader play Morton. Two totally different people showed up for that Trautman match.Reader ,when playing well,is almost unstoppable.

Anonymous said...

If Reader plays Dibua in the first round,Reader 6 0 6 1. If Reader is tired,Reader 6 4 6 3

Anonymous said...

Dibua would beat Reader if he is not fresh. It would be a close call if they met first round.

Anonymous said...

odion in three sets, 2-6,7-5,6-3. after he gets into the match with reader and gets use to the spins, he then gets the ball back and end up squeaking a victory.

Anonymous said...

Reader has only 5 losses in two years.I think Reader would beat odion in straight sets

Anonymous said...

It is easy to forget how good Reader is if you just look at him. (No offense Reader, you just don't look very fit) However, he is an unbelievable tennis player. Odion is an athlete in every way, shape, and form but I don't he has the game to hang with a fresh Reader. 5th match during a very hot summer weekend, that could change things. The only thing to go on from history is that Odion retired against Reader at Master's Cup last year. He supposedly was injured but you could not tell by the way he was jumping and moving all over the court in his doubles matches that the Dibuas dominated that weekend.

Anonymous said...

I noticed he pulled out against Reader too! What was up with that? Then Odion and his brother won the doubles!Sounds like he knew he was going to lose to Reader!

Anonymous said...

How about it journeyman, who would win between Reader and Odion?Three facts about Reader;he smokes grass,he has a nosering, and he kicks ass!I cant imagine playing that dude when he was fit!

Anonymous said...

No that wasn't me tooting my own horn, and the guy wasn't 65 for my revenge victory, he was in his early 50's and he plays like Knutson,so it's tough.

Anonymous said...

who the hell says smokes grass??? Also he has been to about maybe 3 bars in the last 5 yrs so I do not know where all the partying reference's comes from????

Anonymous said...

I guess it refers to the fact that Reader throws back a few beers when there is a keg at the tournament site. As do a lot of guys. I hope you are joking if you are actually trying to deny the grass comment. There are much worse vices than hitting the doobie every once in a while.

Anonymous said...

Come on Goldberg that guy you played was at least 70.

Anonymous said...

goldberg, i also herd you lost 0 or 1 to the guy
