2008 4.5 Major Zone Winners and Finalists

Abiline - Winner: John Trautmann Runner Up: Adam Cherry
SAPTA - Winner: Alfonso Rodriguez Runner Up: Jacob Casas
Gallery - Winner: Alfonso Rodriguez Runner Up: Leonardo Solis
Corpus - Winner: Alfonso Rodriguez Runner Up: Alejandro Sanchez
Waco - Winner: Alfonso Rodriguez Runner Up: Alejandro Sanchez
Tyler - Winner: Ben Sticker Runner Up: Dustin Viktorin
Alamo - Winner: Brent Gruno Runner Up: Ben Hawkins
FW - Winner: Wesley Longacre Runner Up: Dustin Viktorin

Is it just me, or is it pretty obvious that Alfonso did not play Tyler, Alamo City, or Fort Worth. Ben Sticker? Wesley Longacre? Who the hell are these guys? I am sure they are great players, but not exactly fixtures in the Texas tournament scene. As far as Alfonso, he has not lost a match this year at 4.5 and beat Tim Green rather easily in 5.0 at Alamo City. I would have to put him right behind Brian Smith and Thomas Reader as third best LEVELS (not open) player in the state as I would go with him to have won the four 5.0 majors that Green won had Alfonso played those tournaments at 5.0. Again, just my opinion and not meant as a slight to Tim who is a really strong player. Alfonso is just better. Just imagine how it must feel for Federer to deal with the fact that Nadal is just better than him now.

I think you are giving Alfonso a little bit too much praise. Let the guy win a 5.0 tournament before you start touting him as being one of the best 5.0s in the state. Though I agree that he beat Tim convincingly enough to put the who's better Tim/Alfonso question to bed for the time being. He beat Tim in 3 sets when Tim was at his peak and he beat him again much more easily 3 years later. Enough for me.

Brett Sticker is a former Lamar University player. Shouldn't be eligible for 4.5. But pretty much anybody other than top 50 atp players are 4.5 these days.

No Alfonso at Tyler or FW but the fact that tournament regulars didn't make the finals shows that other local players picked up the slack. The top 6-8 at Fort Worth were very strong.

Alfonso has been given to much credit against the 5.0 players. While he had one good tournament, the player who beat him did not even win the tournament. He will have to do well a few more times at 5.0 to earn all the praise he is receiving. I believe he is very capable but he will have to actually walk the that road first.

Beaumont is looking for more open players in the Labor Day Tourney. If you win the men's open division you will get to play doubles with Marty Fish and Robby Generpi down here. If you go to the USTA Texas section you'll get more info on that.

You better hope Reader doesn't read that last one, cause he'd probably rip you a new one.

Coincidence that Reader and Amit Garg are also good friend? I think not. I think we might just have ourselves the return of "lord of the strings" aka "#8". I hope so. And I agree, Amit is better than Green but I guess his name wasn't mentioned cause he has not made it to the finals of any major zones.

Read Michael Davis's comment on league blog about their experience at Nationals last year. Then you will understand why everyone thinks Benzon and Torres are losers.

#8, why so much hate & anger in your tone. Maybe some of us don't know who Red & Alan are, so why don't you tell us what happen.

I agree, Amit Garg would be top 2 easily if he played as often. He;s probably more talented than anything-but i'd like to see him play more often. why so much hate with benzon/torres? can someone tell us what the heck happened?

I think someone's just TRYING to sound like Lord of the Strings.I seriously doubt he even reads this anymore

What happened with Benzon and Torres?Where do I begin?Everybody knows they both don't give a shit about the rules.Especially in league play. And it does affect tournaments because they have their cronies(vasquez and cambon)tank in all the tournaments! They waste everyone's time and tank all of their matches in order to get rated down to 4.5s so they can get their national team back. The USTA is either blind,or they just don't give a shit.Does anyone else see this? And how many guys on their 4.5 team played D1 tennis in college?

Is this a Tournament Blog or League Blog? Go some place else with your whining about League this and League that. If you've got a bone to pick with Torres or Benzon than confront them and deal with it.
