Waco Time 2009

Time to start talking up Waco. 5.0, why do you guys even bother? 4.5, 33 guys signed up so that's not too bad. Early predictions, Alejandro Sanchez and Tim Green should be favorites. Once again, there are some names missing from the list that surprise me. Looks like at least a couple of the Houston die-hard tennis junkies have finally gotten tired of being non-factors at these tournaments. All good things eventually run their course. How bout that Federer? And dont' tell me about the altitude or that Nadal was tired and maybe even injured. Don't think Fed will win the French but with him and Novak both given Nadal trouble recently and Murray also playing well, this could be finally be an interesting French Open. What does that have to do with Waco? I think they overlap on the schedule. Best of the Best and the Texas Wanna-Be's all going at it over the same weekend.

Waco picks:

Men's Open - Adrian Valdez
Men's 5.0 - Jason Gound
Men's 4.5 - Alejandro Sanchez
Men's 4.0 - Tuyen Nguyen
Men's 3.5 - ???

Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

5.0 is such a complete joke of a division. Guess players in 5.0 are afraid to lose in the 4.5 division.

Anonymous said...

5.0 has been a joke for years. nothing has changed.

Anonymous said...

Some of the 5.0 division players can’t get off work on Friday and only can play on Sat.-Sun. I might be joining them soon myself because it’s getting harder and harder to justify going out of town for a 3 day tennis event. As far as the quality of tennis in 5.0 division, now that’s a whole different topic of discussion and I’m not going to get into that. Good luck to everyone at Waco.

Anonymous said...

You wanna know how bad 5.0 can be? 3 years ago, Kallus had a winning record at 5.0. That should be all you need to know about the quality of 5.0 compared to 4.5.

Anonymous said...

If the same guys signed up for 5.0 in Waco actually decided to play the 4.5 division instead none of them would win the 4.5 tournament there. The only player that would go deep in the draw would be Jason Gound.

Anonymous said...

The 4.5 draw looks fairly deep, I think that any one of a number of players could pull it off; really depends on how the draw pans out and which of the stronger players gets the most favorable draw.

Anonymous said...

So, who won the Waco Open?

Anonymous said...

Seeds are out. Should be some very interesting early match ups in 4.5 singles and doubles.

Anonymous said...

Why is everyone talking about 4.5? Open is where the real tennis is.

Anonymous said...

Yeah! Everything but Open is fake tennis! You fakers!

Anonymous said...

Then why don't you open level players talk about it here? I am a 4.5 so that is what I talk about. I know nothing about open other than I often read here that you guys don't think some guy named Arya should be playing open. How does that make exciting Open talk?

Anonymous said...

Kallus sucks. Kallus would lose in men's open 6-0 6-0. Kallus would lose in mens 2.5 6-2 6-3.

Anonymous said...

I wonder why Sarosh didn't sign up for Waco. He would have gone deep in the 4.5 draw.

Anonymous said...

I think Sarosh would win it.

Anonymous said...

Kallus doesn't suck. He's an average 4.5. Give me a break. He would win 4.0 easily.

Anonymous said...

I like Kallus and I get sick of all the Kallus bashing here but there is no 4.0 major zone in the past three years that Kallus would have won in singles.

Anonymous said...

Some interesting 1st Rd. match-ups in 4.5s are:

Herb Morton vs. Jason Kern
Chris Leach vs. Mark Carter
Time Green vs. Richard Saldana

Who do you pick?

Anonymous said...

How many 4.0 Major Zones did Kallus win while he was a 4.0? I know he won at least one but he also was only a 4.0 for a year or two. I think he might still actually have a chance at 4.0 if he was playing regularly. I think his biggest problem at 4.5 has been the lack of confidence that comes with not winning regularly/easily. That's what usually gets the bulk of us recreational warriors. It's not as much fun to put in the time and money if you are on the losing end all the time.

Anonymous said...

Potential outcomes-

Jason Kern def Herb Morton
Chris Leach def Mark Carter
Richard Saldana def Tim Green

Anonymous said...

Bottom half of the 4.5 draw seems to be tough, not to say there aren't good players in the top as well. The Kern/Morton match seems like a good one, not sure who has been playing more lately, I think that could be the decider. Sevin/Griggs will be a good match if that happens. Anyone see any potential upsets in the first round?

Anonymous said...

Kern will easily beat Morton to set up a nice semi-final in 4.5.

Jason Kern said...

Looking forward to playing Herb, I think it should be fun but I've already checked out the consolation time.
Saldana will not beat Tim unless he has an unwordly day returning.
I would love to play well this weekend and sneak out some victories as it would be fun to play Herb, Leach and Tim in the span of a couple of days. Good luck to everyone, except Herb :).
I'm picking a Sanchez and Green final.

Anonymous said...

Hey Kern, don't be so modest man. Remember, you will earn more points by winning your 1st Rd. match than by winning the consolation all together. I wish I could watch your match, but I’ll be on the court same time as you. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

4.5 Predictions

1. No seed will lose 1st round
2. top half all 4 seeds make the quarters
3. bottom half no seed makes the semis

Semis
Noel vs Luedtke
Kern vs Griggs

Dallas Final

Final
Noel vs Kern

Kern wins

Anonymous said...

Having played both I will say there is a 99% chance Tim beats Saldana. For Saldana to win, EVERYTHING would have to go his way.

That being said I don't think it is a certainty Tim makes it to the finals. He hasn't been playing much lately.

Anonymous said...

If Morton's forehand is on, Kern/Morton should be a good one.

Tim will beat Saldana straight sets.

Anonymous said...

Green vs. Saldana? I am going to use the same benchmark I always use - the kallus line. If you have ever lost to kallus, you are not very good. So looking it up, guess what I can report? Saldana lost to kallus 6-2, 6-1 at Kingwood in 2004. If you were ever capable of losing to kallus by that score, you will not beat Tim Green. I don't care what year it is or how little Tim is playing. Want to hear something even scarier? Kallus actually beat Gound in the final of that tournament 3 & 2. It's an easy guess that is one Gound pretends never happened.

Anonymous said...

As Spock would say, 'fascinating"...

I have a question. I noticed one of the so called "sandbaggers" of the dallas area, Christopher Jones has a 3.5 computer rating. But there is also a Chris Jones from Coppell with a 4.0 tournament rating. Is this the same guy? Did he get rated 4.0 and create a new USTA account to sand bag? Does anyone know if there are actually two Chris Jone's from Coppell that play USTA?

May 26, 2009 1:04 PM

This was posted on the Dallas Tennis Blog and this huy is signed up to play 3.5 in Waco. Any thoughts?

Anonymous said...

Kallas has beaten Tim.

Anonymous said...

Whatever. From what I gather from this website, Kallus has never beaten anyone at any level, male or female. Kallus beat Green. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Kallus plays so damn much that he has a win over everyone. Flat ball versus Gounds roundhouse? Tough matchup.

Anonymous said...

Kallus is actually a pretty good player. His flat balls can give many players trouble. It is his mental ability which has really hurt him.

Anonymous said...

kern vs sanchez
green vs david l.

sanchez vs green

green wins

kern will beat herb 6-3, 6-2

Anonymous said...

Hang on Sanchez fans. Anyone remember the last time Hopper played Sanchez?

Anonymous said...

I believe Sanchez was injured at Sectionals last year when he lost to Hopper - but that's not to say Hopper couldn't win again.

Anonymous said...

If Herb Morton is returning well, watch out Kern. I think it will be a hard fought 3-setter match. Dinker should win easy against Saldana. There won’t be any upset in Rd. 1 between A. Sanchez vs. M Hopper. Sanchez will win in straight sets.

oldschool said...

Look for Filip Kanczula to go deep in the open draw, and Boone and Kanczula to do well in the dubs.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Kallus I believe has beaten Green the last two times they have played. With that said it really does not matter since Kallus is not playing Waco. I am also surprised Moser and Schmucker are not playing either.

I think Kern will come thru the bottom half to make it into the finals. His game is more complete then Green's. Tim does not have a good baseline game and that is why I give the edge to Kern because his baseline game is better. Both are really good at the net, but if some of the rallies are baseline to baseline then Kern has the edge.

Anonymous said...

The only way Herb does not get taken to the woodshed is if he is a no show.
The Herb of 10 years ago would win this match. The current day Herb cannot beat Goldburger.
There is no sham in losing to Goldburger he is just not the best player in 4.5s

Anonymous said...

Both good at the net you say. Does this make them 2 a favorite for 4.5 doubles.

Anonymous said...

Ok now 'Goldburger' is the next 'Kallus'. Where does it all end?

Anonymous said...

JM, it's a sad day for Marat Safin at the French Open. He lost 10-8 in the fifth set to a frenchman inthe 2nd round. He said this was his last French Open tourney.

Anonymous said...

I spent a good 4 hours or so watching that match. The Frenchman (Ouanna), played impressive for a young qualifier playing his 2nd 5 setter in a couple of days.

Sharapova had a nice win today as well over the 11 seed in 3 sets.

Anonymous said...

Everyone already knows that Nadal will win on the Men's side.

Anonymous said...

Prediction for Waco and beyond:
1. Kallus sucks.

Anonymous said...

Please leave Kallus out of this. He ain't even playing in the tournament.

Anonymous said...

Is Kallus playing Waco?

Anonymous said...

Who is Kallus playing?

Anonymous said...

Kallus is 'NOT' playing in Waco.

Anonymous said...

What time is his match?

Anonymous said...

I drew kallus in waco, first round, any advice?

Anonymous said...

hit it over the net. you should beat him

kallus said...

Though I did beat Tim twice in a row a few years back, he beat me quite a few times in a row after that and without much trouble.

No, I am not playing Waco, or Tyler, and probably not San Antonio, Fort Worth, or Sectionals.

Wish I could. But the combination of career, family, and a bad right heel have pretty much ruled out traveling out of town for tournaments this year. Sorry to all those who will not have the chance to beat me. Maybe next year.

Anonymous said...

So, who won the Waco Open?

Anonymous said...

Daniel don't let a bunch of Tards ruin your fun on this blog. I didn't know there were that many jealous insecure players on here blogging about you so much.

Anonymous said...

You're Mom won Waco!

Anonymous said...

I think that was actually the real Kallus cause I know he has a messed up foot.

Too bad you won't be playing. You may not always play your best tennis but you usually keep it entertaining.

Anonymous said...

If Kallus didnt make so many excuses for everytime he lost, and gave credit to his opponents instead of chalkin it up to something that caused him to play so bad, maybe people would not be so critical of him. He's a nice guy, BUT he has an excuse for EVERYTHING when he loses! The creativity in his excuses is AMAZING!

Anonymous said...

Who won the doubles in Waco?

This blog is so funny!!! The comments on: Is Kallus playing Waco, Who is Kallus playing, Kallus is 'NOT' playing in Waco, What time is his match, I drew kallus in waco, first round, any advice... That was hilarious, even Kallus would laugh about that one.

Me no like you make fun of señor Kallus. Señor Kallus is my amigo.

LOL, you all are some crazy mofos...

Anonymous said...

Word of the day:

TARD

Anonymous said...

Yeah Kallus does make excuses everytime he loses. Not for sure why he cannot take a beating without complaining about something. Tends to get very annoying. Kallus loses because Kallus lost the match not because of the other player.

Anonymous said...

Even tho you guys make fun of Kallus... it is so funny. Kallus would even laugh about it.

Anonymous said...

Kern beat Herb 6-1, 6-0. Herb sucks. Goldburger will probably take Herb to the woodshed in the loser bracket next.

Go Goldburger.

Lord of the Strings,,,,,, shut your fowl mouth, kids are reading this blog.

By the way, I bought the same nose ring as you and that cheap piece of crap gave me an infection!!!!

Anonymous said...

Has Kallus lost yet?

dinker said...

Kern...I told you that you were the favorite over me...just look at the blog votes...I have no votes.

I think I am going to choose you as well.

By the way, since your baseline game is better than mine according to anonymous, let's both stay back.

Anonymous said...

Kern and Green both know they are top dogs. I believe it will be a good match between them. I just wish they would both stop pretending they think the other one is better. Tim knows he is better than Jason. Jason knows he is better than Tim. I wish one of them would be truthful and admit they are the better player. Tim please state you are going to kick Jason butt. Jason please do the same.

Jason Kern said...

OK Dinker it doesn't count if you and Goldberger sit in your room and vote for me on the poll just so you feel like the underdog. Let's go to the facts..
Green
4 time 5.0 MZ champion in 2008
Weighs 120 lbs. soaking wet
A mean lean destruction machine
Kern
Never been even in a 4.5 final
Carrying around twice that much weight in blubber
Who wins every time, especially in the heat?
That's right the same player who gets to play his preferred side in doubles.
BTW you have a vote in the poll now. Go Green. At least publicly apologize to me on the blog after you kick my rear.

Anonymous said...

Both Green/Kern are heavy loads to carry. I know from experience. One dislocates his finger the other pretends he can jump and misses easy volleys. Geez,IMO they should just play a bar game for the match and save themselves for the final.

We all know that Kern's steadier from the baseline but Tim should just drop shot lob Kern til he drops. Don't fall for those long breaks between points that Kern takes Tim.

At least we know one thing for sure if they can move in unison they should be able to bring home a Major Zone doubles title.

BTW I voted for you Tim but I'm trying to contact JM to take back my vote.

HtownHacker said...

Good call on Kanczula, Old School.

dinker said...

I will like to put my bet on "Flying" J.

Anonymous said...

Dinker/Kern are both mediocre 4.5 players. Although 1 of them is gonna wear themselves out today. Kern is -130 in vegas sportsbook while Green is +115

dinker said...

Freeman...I am sitting here with Kern, which one of us did you want to tank today?

Anonymous said...

1 and a half hours in and still no score reported - - come on dinker - was it 0 and 0.

To all tennis players,

Remi Osho has passed. His family and friends are having a memorial/fundraiser tonight at Woodlake tennis center at 7pm. The address is 2200 Tanglewilde. Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers.

Anonymous said...

Dinker won in 3rd set tiebreaker over Kern.

Anonymous said...

What happened to Red Benzon? He used to play tournaments now he just stays in Houston.

Anonymous said...

Rivera vs Green in finals of 4.5. After Benzon got bumped to 5.0 he retired. He can't compete with the Big Boys!

Anonymous said...

Benzon couldn't win a match in 4.5 Tournaments.

Anonymous said...

If Houston were to send representatives for Open,5.0,4.5,4.0 who would they be? For tournaments that is.

Anonymous said...

Green lost 3,4.

Anonymous said...

Good Tournament Dinker. Not bad for not being seeded. Go win the doubles now.

Anonymous said...

Tim Green is a low life. He and Benzon need to be banned for life.

Anonymous said...

why should they be banned?

Anonymous said...

Who won 4.5 doubles?

Anonymous said...

We all know Red is a thief. Go ask Brad Blume at Tennis Express about Red.

Anonymous said...

Wow,love the personal attacks. Its too bad you can't post your name behind it.

luedtke/rivera won the doubles in 3 sets over kern/green.

kallus said...

How's this for my excuse for not winning in Waco?

I didn't play in the tournament. Not my most creative excuse, I know. Maybe that's why I stopped playing, I couldn't think of any new and interesting ways to explain my losing without having to concede that my opponent beat me. Cause we all know I think I am a better tennis player than everyone else and it's so shocking when I lose. Please.

Anonymous said...

Who's better Sarosh or Kallus? Moser or Green? Schmucker or Kern?

Anonymous said...

Anybody have updates on 5.0 division at waco.

Anonymous said...

If they combined 5.0 and 4.5 at major zones who would win? Most 5.0 tournaments are 4.5 players.

Anonymous said...

If they combined 5.0 and 4.5 at major zones who would win? Most 5.0 tournaments are 4.5 players.

Anonymous said...

" Who's better Sarosh or Kallus? Moser or Green? Schmucker or Kern?"

1. sarosh is better, but kallus does cheat

2. moser is better. he's playing some great tennis

3. kern is better. schmucker hasn't won anything lately or beaten any big names

Anonymous said...

thanks for the heads up on red... i started paying more attention to my bag when he comes around.

Anonymous said...

Congrats Charlie, winning your home major zone in 4.5 singles and doubles with Luedtke!

Anonymous said...

kalkus cheats?

Anonymous said...

oooopsss. i meant to say at least kallus does NOT cheat!

Anonymous said...

How can you compare Kallus, Sarosh, Moser, Green, Kern, and Schmucker?

Moser by far is the better play of the above. He has won more titles and is playing really good tennis right now.

Sarosh give me a break. He only plays the Gallery and thats it for him till next year.

Kallus is not really playing this year so you really can't count him in the equation.

Same with Kern he has not been playing that much either. He did have a couple of tough matches in Waco though.

Schmucker has not been playing too much either. He had a good run at the Gallery this year and got as far as Moser in the draw. Perhaps he is waiting for the summer to heat up who knows.

Green lost on Saturday at the Gallery and loses to old man Riveria who lost to Rene Ramirez at the Gallery.

So overall the player on the roll right now is Moser. I really don't see anyone stopping him unless Moser still has problems playing in the heat.

Anonymous said...

i agree, moser is the top dawg on that list

Anonymous said...

Congrats to all the winners at Waco. The weather was hot & toasty, but a lot of good tennis was played never the less.

Anonymous said...

My picks for top houston players.

open- robert collins

5.0- brian smith

4.5- omon dibua

4.0- bruce inting

Anonymous said...

Hasker vs Moser? Hasker vs Omon?

Anonymous said...

So Rene beat Charlie Riveria at Gallery and Green loses to Riveria in Waco?????

How?

CoreDawg said...

Dinker,

Any issues with Charlie in the finals? You already heard mine so I thought I would ask. Good tournament for you and Jason both.

Anonymous said...

Hey JM, did you see that Portuguese teenager screaming on top of her lungs at the French Open. Her screams sounded like someone was trying to beat her up or something. Even her opponent asked the chair empire to tell her to STFU. All that screaming was to no vail as she ended up losing.

Anonymous said...

Rivera has a loose screw. He can play well but, at any moment can self destruct. Can you say "GAMESMANSHIP" Mr. Rivera?

Anonymous said...

Aren't upset supposed to happen at Tournaments?

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah.

Anonymous said...

Moser is average at best.

Anonymous said...

moser is average at best? are you kidding me? he's been in almost all the finals or winning the tourneys. he's a top 4.5 player. the only one that he would lose to are open players and 5.0 players.

Anonymous said...

moser has a big forehand. he's got to find a 2nd serve if he plans to contend with the 5.0's

Anonymous said...

Anyone playing the doubles at Lost Forest this weekend?

Anonymous said...

So, who won Waco?

Anonymous said...

He went 3 sets with Peter Rothe in singles. I agree, Moser is slightly above average 4.5.

Anonymous said...

he also went 3 sets with omon. that makes him a top 4.5 to above 5.0

Anonymous said...

Did Charlie manage to keep his temper in check while winning?

Guy is a loose cannon when he gets down. Never seen him win anything to know if he's a decent winner.

Anonymous said...

I guess there is a little bit of loose cannon in all of us who care about playing and wanting to win, isn't there?

Anonymous said...

Charlie Rivera is a good guy. I am not surprised he won a major zone, but I am surprised he did so before David Luedtke.

dinker said...

Congrats to Charlie... Yes he can be loud at times but he only directed it at himself... I can do the same. He played well and should get congrats from all.

As for this Moser talk, maybe we should settle that argument on the court! Did someone say he has won more majors? I don't think he has won with me in the draw.

Here comes the unseeded!

dinker said...

Kern...had lots of fun. Enjoyed the singles a lot. Sorry I was to heavy for you to carry me in the doubles. We should do it again someday. I need an upgrade over Red.

Anonymous said...

Tim Moser is vastly better than you. Moser would of NEVER have lost to Riveria especially by the score you lost to Riveria.

What is sad you got beat by an old man 50 + and in the heat.

Anonymous said...

Tim,

You and Moser were in the draw together at Gallery and Moser got further than you did.

So it appears you are wrong. Moser didn't win the tournament, but he got further than you go figure. If you were such a good player then you should of won Gallery.

But you didn't!

Anonymous said...

"Congrats to Charlie... Yes he can be loud at times but he only directed it at himself..."

That's definitely an improvement then. In the past, his anger has been directed at his opponent, a roving official, and his racket.

Anonymous said...

Nuff said....nuffing right.

Anonymous said...

Greg went further then Tim at the Gallery. He is also better than Tim by that logic.

Anonymous said...

It is ridiculous to try to rank players based on results at a single tournament. Based on Coke alone, Tim still did better than the other guys because of the caliber of the opponent he lost to. I would be interested in seeing the results of a Moser/Green match but based on tournament accomplishment alone, Tim is far and away the better player. One major zone at 4.5 for Moser is great but what does Tim have between 4.5 and 5.0 combined? I know it is well north of ten.

Anonymous said...

the old Tim a year ago is better then Moser a year ago. currently Moser is much better and would destroy Tim.

Period........

Anonymous said...

Enuff already. OK fellows you asked for it you got it. Journeyman why don't you help us settle this score once and for all. Let them two (Green & Moser) come to Memorial park for a 2 out of 3 sets match. The winner gets all the glory afterwards. What do you say to that JM?

Journeyman said...

OK. By the power vested in me by the existence of this blog, I decree that one Tim Green must play one Jochen Moser at Memorial Park on an evening or weekend made known to all blog participants so that they may be present to cheer or boo accordingly. The format shall be 2 of 3 sets, ad-scoring. The balls must be Wilson US Open Extra Duty (available at MP Tennis Center) and the courts fees will be paid by the loser. I decreed it, so you have no choice but to do it...so there. Any thing else I can do?

Anonymous said...

one special rule... you must wear gym shorts and play with wooden rackets

Anonymous said...

Can I get X-Large fries to go with that?

Anonymous said...

I can't wait to see the match. JM, what is the date and time. I predict Moser will beat Tim 6-3, 6-1. Tim better bring some money for the court fee.

Anonymous said...

Moser and Kern would have one the Waco's finals doubles match easily.

Anonymous said...

Moser is not in the same league with Kern or Green.

Jason Kern said...

I don't think a Bryan brother could have carried me as poorly as I played the last set and a half.
I'd play with you anytime Dinker, I may not have Reds trick shots but I can talk better trash!
The singles match was the most fun I've had playing singles in a long time.
For the record, Rivera couldn't miss the first set in the singles final and I like to think maybe Dinker was a little tired from his semi.

Anonymous said...

Looks like some people are just now realizing how much of a jerk guys like Rivera can be when things aren't going their way. I guess it's pretty hard on the ego when you're a former satellite player having to resort to playing 4.5 to recapture past glory. Why can't all these former studs just let the chips fall where they may without all the antics? Why players keep tying up their self-worth in a tennis match is beyond me. You can't expect to win every match.......unless of course if you're sandbagging. There's not enough at stake to hook people to win/act like an ass etc. Maybe there is, I don't know. Having a bad rep will almost always invalidate any win on the court, ask most any LEGITIMATE player in a division & they'll tell you. We're PAYING to play these events for crying out loud. Way more than we'd care to I might add.

Anonymous said...

Dude take it easy and stop making excuses regarding Riveria. The guy is like what 50 + years so give me a break. Also it is the only MZ he has won as well in 4.5's so I wouldn't call him a sandbagger

Green just lost to an old man so stop making excuses.

Anonymous said...

Lets talk about the next tournament Tyler, it looks like is going to be intresting.

Anonymous said...

Why is Aadrian Hasker playing 4.5 at Lost Forest? I doubt it will help his game.

Anonymous said...

He let Green win...

Anonymous said...

Hey Journeyman start up some Tyler talk. Waco's long gone.
