The Fort Worth draws have been posted so please come forward will your predictions and comments. In 4.5, looks like Jochen Moser will have a strong shot at making it 8 for 8 in terms of reaching semis or better at Major Zones this year. No recognizable sandbaggers in the draw.
Would expect winner to come from group of Jochen Moser, Roger Moralez, Greg Schmucker, and Alejandro Sanchez. Don't see JD Miles beating Greg in quarters and don't see Kallus getting past Torch Acosta in the round of 16.
In 5.0, see winner coming from Pat Abshire or Henry Manalo. Red Benzon's got the game, but can he stand Fort Worth heat for 2 matches on Saturday?
See Nathan Lenss and Michael Miller winning 4.5 doubles. Kallus/Moser #1 seeds but tough to see them getting over Cass/McCallum in 1st match. Were down a set to Cass in San Antonio before he and his partner defaulted. Plus Cass beat Moser in in Corpus, though both had different partners.
That's my two cents, so have at it.

I also don't see Moser/Kallus getting by Cass/McCallum unless Moser/Kallus can figure out another way to make them default like in SA. I think the bottom half semi will be Rothe/Benoit vs. Miller/Lenss with the winner of that match winning the tournament - and it would not surprise me at all if it was Rothe/Benoit.
Don't underestimate Moser's ability to get under his opponent's skin. Just ask Red Benzon. Bet Cass is already losing patience and the match isn't for another 4 days.
Moser is hard to figure out in doubles because singles takes too much out of him. Don't really see Kallus/Moser going far once Moser starts to wear down.
My predications for the 4.5 Singles.
Moser will not make it because of the heat. I believe he plays indoors a lot and the weather in Ft Worth will be very hot. So another player will make it through the top half.
Bottom half it will be either Schmucker or Sanchez. Good draw for either player on the bottom half. No other players on the bottom half can challenge the above players.
Schmucker won't beat Miles. Kallus being ranked and seeded in doubles tells you all you need to know about "4.5" doubles. He's a lousy 4.0 player in league doubles.
Oh yeah! The gloves are off. Let's see how Kallus handles that 4.0 doubles glove being slapped in his face. He definitely is not a traditional doubles player and I would not defend him as being a strong player, but I was on a team with him a few years ago that went to Citywides and he and his partner did beat Phong Regent and Henry Li. I remember because we thought we were sacrificing line 1 by putting him there with a 4.0 rated player because we were short handed but they actually shocked by pulling off the upset.
Kallus probably has a spreadsheet that would refute the 4.0 accusation. If you know him, you know what I am talking about.
Kallus has the best reflex volleys in Texas.
Schmucker can beat Miles, if Schmucker shows up. It's a long drive up there.... Probably Cherry is the guy to watch out for in the upper half. He took a set off Schmucker in Tyler.
I would not rate Kallus or Moser as strong doubles players but sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. They have a style of play that they are comfortable with and they do it well enough to bother and even beat some very good teams.
I agree with the last poster. Kallus does not go to the net and can't hit overheads at all and Moser has absolutely no second serve. But they make up for it with Jochen being an aggressive poacher on Kallus' flat serve and Kallus' return of serve and flat forehand passing shot. It seems to work well enough based on their results this year. The loss to Reggie Black and Ronnie Johnson does not make sense but other than that they have lost close matches against the stronger doubles teams in 4.5 and have beaten a couple of really good teams. That being said, they probably would get pummeled in 4.5 league play, especially at line 1.
Kallus has a game that can surprise if he will focus on the court. He defeated me and Herb on year at the Coke in doubles when he teamed with Dafel. He also has defeated me years ago in singles.
Focus? You got that right. Is there anything that doesn't bother that guy on the court. He is the most mental guy I have ever played against. If the net is like 1/16 of an inch too high the guy freaks out and no offense to him but there is no one I would rather face on a windy day.
Kallus has no confidence in his game so he blames the wind, courts, etc everytime he plays. I used to hit with him, but hearing him whine all the time on the court took the fun out of it. No longer a hitting partner anymore.
Kallus's whining and lack of confidence annoys me too. I would stop hitting with him if I could, but I really have no choice now do I.
The mighty Tim Green was beaten by Kallus? If that happened to me I would retire from tournaments forever.
I pretty much am retired. I have not played a USTA tournament since the Coke.
For the record, please point out that losing to me 4 or 5 years ago had nothing to do with your retirement in 2007. Now I need to get out of this blog because its too windy here and I swear the webpage looks like it slopes.

I did not launch a new blog piece on the Katy results since it was not a USTA tourney but as expected Odion had no problem with the 4.5 draw. I believe Dinker had posted that he thought Dibua might have a hard time with Matlock. He did, if you call winning 6-1, 6-1 having a hard time. Was suprised by Monty Lindloff's strong showing in both singles and doubles as he and his partner took down Odion's brother Omon in the finals in straight sets.
Monty also made it pretty deep in mixed. It was a good tournament for him. Quite impressive.
Speaking of Odion, why does he keep playing 4.5? His record this year must be 25:1 or so. I guess it helps his ego.

Eddie Janek lost in the finals for the Men's 4.0 division. Greg Schmucker won the Men's 4.5 division. No Houston player made it in the finals for 5.0, however Reggie Black and Ronnie Johnson split sets in the Men's 5.0 Doubles Final and Moser and Kallus lost in the Men's 4.5 doubles final.
Really good matches I watched. Janek's match in the final today. Really good points, but I think the heat was a factor.
Wescoup vs Abshire in the Men's 5.0 Semi-final match. Think the third set tie-breaker was 16 - 14 for Wescoup. Awesome match - A battle to the end.
Schmucker taking down Sanchez in the Men's 4.5 semi. Two guys banging the hell out of the ball. Big forehands from both players reminded me of an open match more than 4.5 match. Again the heat was a factor in that match.
