Welcome

Well, I wasted 10 minutes setting this up so let's not let all the effort go to waste. This is meant to be something of an alternative/companion site to the league blog that exists thanks to someone else's continuing efforts. However, I know a hell of a lot more about the tourney scene than I do the league scene as I personally stink enough to be a perennial non-factor in league play. Of course, I am slowly but surely becoming a non-factor in the tourney scene as well but having played about 200 tournaments in the past 20 years, I definitely know a thing or two that could be useful to someone and I definitely have crossed paths with the majority of the non-Open level Houston tennis community. I don't plan on being much of a moderator so other than setting this thing up, I hope everyone else will flood it with ongoing commentary, questions, and a healthy dose of thrash talking. I know from personal experience that there are more than enough of you out there who seem to have mastered the art.

Cool that you got it setup but where's the discussion? I will kick it off with this question. As things stand right now, who do you think will make it to the Season Ending Masters Cup Tourney in Austin (top 8)for singles and doubles for 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 levels?

Thanks for wasting your time and setting up this site. I am relatively new to the houston tennis scene and was fortunate enough to experience the excitement of city playoffs. Its been a lot of fun getting the behind-the-scenes ... bring on the trash talk!

The level I know best is the 4.5 doubles so here are the teams/individuals (since some of the top 8 will have played with multiple partners it might be difficult to know who they will play with in Austin) that I think will qualify based on who is playing in the Fort Worth major zone and the assumption that all the top players play in Sectionals:

Greg Gold & Greg Dyer
Jochen Moser & Dan Kallus
Thomas Reader & James Regmund
Vincent Giordanelli & partner
Mike Miller & partner
Peter Rothe & partner
Chris Hunckler & partner
Odion Dibua & partner

Rothe and Hunckler have actually played together this year and could conceivable partner for Austin making room for another team. Same thing with Giordanelli and Miller although Giordanelli will probably play with his brother, leaving Miller to play with Nathan Lens who he is playing with in the Fort Worth major zone and will likely play with at Sectionals.

My pick is Reader and whoever he plays with. He's definitely ringer material with a exclamation point in singles or doubles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There no non ringer in 4.5 that has any chance against Reader. That guy needs to play 5.0 or open.

Anonymous said...

Reader is certainly a 5.0 player but I don't think that calling him a "ringer" is fair. He wants to be rated 5.0 and I have never seen him tank a match but the computer spit him out as a 4.5 after last year. This is probably the only year that he will be able to play 4.5 - the computer can not be stupid enough to rate him a 4.5 again next year and the mid season ratings which have him as a 5.0 bear that out - so why not play and see where it takes him?

I guess I usually think of a "ringer" as someone who has been sneaky about getting a rating by some less than honorable act or by exploiting some loophole in the system. Reader has done neither.

5.0 Singles - Jason Gound wins, are there in 7 other guys playing 5.0 this year? Doesn't seem like it.

4.5 Singles - Reader is far and away the best player in 4.5 but Jochen Moser may end up getting him on points for the season. I would pick Reader to win the Austin Masters tourny with easy straight set wins in all his matches.

4.0 Singles - Whatever.

5.0 Doubles - Has anyone played a 5.0 doubles match in 2007?

4.5 Doubles - I agree with the picks from the prior poster. There is one team in that mix that surprises me based on what I would call an apparent lack of doubles skills but it looks like they will definitely be there at the end of the year.

4.0 Doubles - Pass.

Reader should change his name to Thomas Reefer. If you have ever been around the guy, on or off the tennis court, you know exactly what I mean.

Thomas Reefer - nice. I know exactly what you are talking about.

I agree with Topspin's assessment of all the levels. If Reader plays both Sectionals and the Masters I would bet that he overtakes Moser. I also think that he and Regmund will probably finish first in 4.5 doubles seeing as how they have yet to lose a tournament match this year and have beaten all of the top teams.

I wonder which team in 4.5 he could possibly be talking about with an apparent lack of doubles skill ;-) Just shows you what can happen if you play in every major zone and manage to win a match here or there.

Thanks for setting this up. What about Top 8 4.5 Singles?

Who will win the Katy draws this weekend?

Anonymous said...

Odion Dibua will win both singles and doubles in Men's 4.5. Why did he have to get a job with a company here in Houston after graduating from graduating A&M. Damn you energy industry for being so strong right now.

Top 8 4.5 qualifiers (order not exact):

Thomas Reader
Jochen Moser
JD Miles
Jacob Casas
John Trautman
Odion Dibua

Last 2 spots up for grabs between:

Philip Griggs
Daniel Kallus
Alejandro Sanchez
Greg Schmucker

Topspin Assassin,

It will be hard for Odion to win the 4.5 doubles at Katy since he is not playing 4.5 doubles. He will win the 4.5 singles if he beats Jeff Matlock.

Anonymous said...

Sorry. I just saw Dibua and assumed it was Odion. Not much of a change to prediction though, just plug Omon in instead of Odion.

I think Alejandro Sanchez and Greg Schmucker will make the final two spots for the year ending Austin Tournament. I saw both of them play in San Antonio and they were crushing the ball. Really impressive match to watch. I also sae Reader at the tournament as well and I was wondering whats the deal with the nose ring?

Anonymous said...

The Nose Ring justifies he's a Ringer with a Cause to support alot of pain in his matches. Schmucker and Sanchez couldn't compete with Reader, Hell who can in 4.5's??

Anonymous said...

dont let the nosering scare you but my forehand will!

Anonymous said...

I forgot to mention Scmucker was 3-2 in 4.5 in 2006. Not very good.

Kern loses in the semi finals to the number one seed in a close match. Redeems himself by winning the doubles. Not bad for a player who played 4.0 last year.

Sunshine Cup (Jr, Ad, Sr, SS)
Feb. 22-23
Sarosh is playing 4.5s, I guarantee Sarosh will win this tournament. Yes, I know this is a lame tournament.

Coke Finalist Solis loses to Knutson how embarrassing for Solis.

Anonymous said...

4 players in the 5.0 draw. All four are rated 4.5, move them down to the 4.5 draw.

Anonymous said...

Goldberg just because you are the newest ringer on the Hurricanes does not mean you are the best player in 4.5. I bet Blessing could beat you.

Anonymous said...

Kallus will win the tournament, he has been practicing alot.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Leach what was your score? Do you know how that Goldberg dude did, alot of people picked him to win the tourney.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Lord of the Strings, this blg is BS.
Why can't you just get rid of the anonymous identity that is on the blog?
