Can Ya Feel The Wind Already?

Yep, only a couple of days away from Corpus so time to fire up the discussion again. Starting with 4.5s, you don't have to go far down the draw to find the first compelling potential matchup and that would be a possible 2nd round showdown between Houston's own Greg Schmucker and Kris Knutson. Kris's unique style could be quite a handful if the conditions are on the windy side. If Greg shows I would think he should be able to come out on top if he stays patient. I am aware that Kris has had his number in the past but I believe it has been quite a while since they have last played. Brian Goldberg also will have his hands full with a tough 1st round draw against Leonardo Solis. Hopefully Brian can give him a tough fight but I would have to go with Leonardo. As someone pointed out, Kallus should be able to come out the victor against his 1st round opponent BYE but then will have to face the winner of two local Corpus guys. If there is even a hint of breeze, I am going with the Corpus guy. Bradley Nash, John Griffin, Ruben Vargas, and Richard Patton round out the Houston contigent and all would appear to have winnable 1st round matchups. Not saying they should win, just that the opponent's names should not inspire fear either. I know there will probably be at least 1 unknown and unseeded player who makes his way very deep but looking at the draw as it stands, I would go with Solis and Rodriguez in 1 semis & Sanchez and Casas in the other with Rodriguez taking home his 3rd Major Zone of the Year.

In 5.0, all but 1 of the 7 players are Houston area guys. The only compelling 1st round match up will be between Tim Green and Reggie Black as they both play well in the typical Corpus Conditions. Tim should come through in this one and should then win the tournament over the winner of the match between Herb Morton and Joe Schornick. From what I have heard, Tim has pretty much owned the Corpus tournament in the past at 4.0s, 4.5s, and 5.0s. Look for the domination to continue.

And finally, yes there will be some 4.0s going at it as well. Will Foad be able to break the streak of 1st round Major Zone exits? Will he fight his way through the consolation draw? Will anyone else try to comment on 4.0s since I obviously cant'? We shall see.

Kallus will take BYE, but it will take him 3 sets.

Leave Kallus alone. He's my friend.

Where are all the shitty comments about the players?

Anonymous said...

why is the 5.0 division so weak?

Anonymous said...

5.0's traditionally has always been weak. Hell I should have signed up for it b/c my draw is too big!

The Coca Cola Open and Sectionals is usually the only good 5.0 draw, but its made up of mostly 4.5 guys anyway.

5.0 is a joke anymore. Reggie Black for one is no 5.0. I would love Reggie to play 4.5 because he would not win in that division as well. Alfonso would win the 5.0 division as well.

lot of true 5.0s play 4.5 because the computer rating system is flawed

Predictions for Corpus (need someone to stir up trouble):

Tim Green loses to Reggie Black over bad line calls.

Jacob Casas starts a new trend in mens clothing: Mens skorts

Jacob Casas wins a match w/o making bad line calls.

Go Kallus!!! Kallus wins 4.5 singles.

Foad wins 4.0 and gets bumped to 5.0 next year to become Lost Forest's "ringer" It will be your loss Freeman you did not sign him to a 3 year deal.

Freeman tanks his first round match in hopes of getting bumped down to 3.0 so he can captain a 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 in 2009. Watch out 5.0 captains, he will be gunning for a 5.0 team in 2010.

I agree with all of your predictions except one. BYE beats Kallus in straight sets.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the Kallus prediction is to unbelievable. Kallus if you get bumped down again to 4.0 AGAIN, take advantage of it and kick some ass in summer league. While you may not win 100%, i give you at least 80% chance of winning all your singles matches.

GO KALLUS!!!!

Kallus would be able to compete with most of the top 4.0 players in league tennis and would certainly win a couple of major zones or at least be a contender.

Anonymous said...

true, I actually think Kallus would be a top 10 contender in the 3.5s and just average in the 4.0. That is of course if the wind is not blowing or his competition does not hit to many lobs. Go Kallus!!!!!

if daniel would lose some weight there is no reason why he should not be in the top five 3.5. Mens of course.

Wow! 6 comments in a row about me. I guess it would be wrong of me to disappoint and not make some kind of response. So, thanks I guess for keeping me in your thoughts, even if they are all negative. I will do my best to stay focused against BYE. I feel pretty confident because I have played him many times and I have never lost to him before. In fact it has never even gone 3 sets. Of course, too often I ended up not having enough energy left to play well in my second match. Maybe this will be one of those times I actually show up and play some decent tennis. As if any of you actually want that.

Well said Kallus. You know they're just messing with you dude. Good luck in Corpus and show no mercy on Mr. Bye.

Kallus, you know that the WIND is already in your head and your opponent is serving for the match. You got the game, stop losing before you walk on to the courts.

Red Benzon won the 5.0 singles in Corpus last year. Tim Green didn't dominate.

Anonymous said...

Did Tim play Corpus last year? If he did and Red still won, great for Red. If Tim didn't play last year, then what is your point? Tim has pretty much won that tournament every year he has PLAYED it. Guess what, Tiger Woods doesn't dominate golf tournaments he doesn't actually play in either.

Anonymous said...

Tim DID NOT play Corpus last year. No offense to Red, but I would have put my money on Tim to have won the tourney last year as well if he had gone down there. But it was one hell of point you made as he most definitely did not dominate Corpus 5.0 in the year 2007.

I'm disappointed I did not play Corpus this year but, I to agree Tim would have been tough to beat.Although I did beat Martin Del Campo and Schornick then Pacheco in the Finals so pls.give me a little credit. Good Luck to all those competing in Corpus this weekend.

Red

I predict Tim green 5.0 winner and Alfonso Rodriguez or MartinDel Campo as 4.5 Winner. those boys from the Valley and Mcallen and Brownsville come to play!!

Foad is in the SEMIS of Corpus. I know we are all shocked, but I think he is trying to prove us all wrong.

Kallus you let me down, but at least you won two matches: BYE and squeaked by someone else.

Anonymous said...

Did Schmucker skip Corpus because he is 1 and 8 against Knutson?

Anonymous said...

Schmucker missed Corpus because he is a Mgr at Best Buy and could not get off over the weekend. That is why he has missed some tournaments this year because he works retail.

I know he is trying to find a new job.

Congrats to all the winners at Buc Days:

Men 5.0 Singles- Tim Green
Men 4.5 Singles- Alfonso Rodriguez
Men 4.0 Singles- Ismael Dutchover
Men 3.5 Singles- Jeff Rapach

Coke Finalist Solis loses to Knutson how embarrassing for Solis.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Knutson on a great tournament.

Anonymous said...

Knutson has the kind of game that could frustrate big hitters, especially in the wind. Gotta give credit where its due. Tennis is a sport where anything can happen, and usually does. Foad and Kallus both made it past the first round, what a shock to the tennis world.

There wasn't any posting by Journeyman since friday, so Journeyman were you in the 4.5 draw and how did you do?

Anonymous said...

Journeyman defaluted to Bye in the 1st Rd.

Anonymous said...

Hey journeyman, how about starting a new discussion?

Anonymous said...

Just look at the tournament site, and check the draw and you can know how he did yourself. Ever give that a thought??

Anonymous said...

Nice tournament, he lost in the quarters.

Anonymous said...

Who is Journeyman? I guess i do not keep up with this site enough or know enough tourney players to have figured it out.

Anonymous said...

I have a good idea, but honestly I do not want to know. I post anonymously so it would only seem fair not to call out anyone else, even the blogger himself. Just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

A good one indeed.

Anonymous said...

Journeyman, give us a couple of hints who you are. You lost in the quarters, didn't you? Otherwise people will start throwing out names deducing who you are!

Anonymous said...

Do a poll where we can try and guess your identity.

Anonymous said...

Journeyman lost in the quarters of women 3.0 draw!

Anonymous said...

Journeyman = Jacob Casas

Anonymous said...

Journeyman = Jacob Casas,
Nah.

Journeyman, this is really getting boring! How about starting a new round of discussion?
