News Flash to Texas Tournaments...US in economic recession!

Any one else get their USTA book/schedule for 2009 and notice that nearly every tournament in the state raised their entry fee by at least $3 - $5? Please correct me if I am wrong, but would this not seem a strange time for tournaments to be looking to squeeze out extra money from entrants? What makes even less sense is that it is the smaller local type tournaments that will only draw a handful of players for each level anyway that are asking the most. $33 to participate in a draw of 5 people at the nearly-monthly Missouri City events at the oh-so-lovely craphole that is Lee LeClear? Please don't hate me but I think I will pass. And don't get me started on the price to play doubles. $31 bucks to get in a 100 point tourney and I only get 1 guaranteed match? Well that t-shirt better be made out of silk, or in Lord of the Strings case, hemp (just joking LOTS, we all love you...even if you are out to kick each and every one of our asses on and off the court). Anyway, it seems like tournament tennis here in Texas keeps on taking one turn for the worse after another and I honestly don't think the players are to blame. If you ask me, $25 tops for singles entry and $20 per player max for doubles. And don't force me to sign up via the internet and then charge me an extra $3 for making your job easier, Mr. Tournament Director. How's that for kicking off the New Year. If you are bored and have money to burn, don't forget Mabry is coming up shortly for the 200 point, likes-to-travel crowd or you can just blow a wad of cash out at Lee LeClear at the 100 pointer I ranted about earlier. I didn't get enough of a response to the idea of a challenge ladder or one day Houston Tourney Tennis Scene tournament so I will drop the idea for the time being. Now get to hitting.

Yea that just plain sucks. What do they think we are, made outta money? I guess we'll all have to start holing up 7 to a room to compensate.

Anonymous said...

I loved the hemp comment about LOTS. Very funny.

Anonymous said...

I agree with $25 tops for singles entry and $20 per player max for doubles. But we are not the Tournament Directors. I used to play the 100 pts. tourneys but now unfortunately as a direct result of price increases I’m only playing 200 and 400 pts. Tournaments.

Anonymous said...

kallus still sucks

Anonymous said...

Also don't forget but the price of gas will increase as it gets closer to summer. Do you really think $1.50 a gallon will last throughout summer?
I believe the tournament increase is because of the lack of players signing up now. So to make a profit with less players the simple solution is to increase entry fees to make up for less players.
Also it would be nice if the Texas Section of the USTA would finally pull their heads out of their asses. But I believe that would be a miracle as well.

JourneyMan,

What is your deal with Schmucker? Seems like you have him in every online poll lately. Did Schmucker beat you in a match or something?

I was just wondering.

Anonymous said...

I have no issue with Schmucker. If I have played him before it would have been in a league match, but I honestly can't remember. It just always sticks in my head that he wastes a lot of money on tournaments he decides not to go to. That's really the only thing about him I have dwelled on, though I agree his name has probably been in a high percentage of recent poll questions. Anyway, more power to him, I am sure he is a great guy.

Anonymous said...

With the low turn outs in the tournaments, they should abolish no-add, two-all BS anymore. Elect Journeyman for Secretary of Finance.

Anonymous said...

I was told that Goldberg, Foad, Kallus, Schmucker, Ronnie Johnson, Tim Pepper, and Herb Morton all got together for a hitting session that lasted 6 hours this past Saturday. If you guys do this every Saturday please let us know because I would like to join as well.

Anonymous said...

It was actually last Thursday, the 1st day of the New Year. They have been doing this for the last 3 years or so and it has become a New Year's day tradition.

Anonymous said...

That's not a bad idea. How about setting up some kind of bi-monthly free-for-all hitting session? It would be a good chance to play different players and get some practice. The logistics may be tough, but worth discussing.

Any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

practicing with these guys would only worsen your game

Anonymous said...

five.....five dollars.....five dollar foot longggggggg

Anonymous said...

Hitting with them will worsen your game? Pretty impressive those guys played for 6 hrs. From the list some pretty good players as well. I played Morton before in a tournament and he kicked my ass all over the court. If there is another hitting session please let us know I am in.

Anonymous said...

Why would it worsen your game? Because Kallus was involved? At least he will stick around and let you beat up on him for 6 hours unlike a few guys I could mention who fake an injury and go home if they are losing, even when it is a meaningless practice match.

Anonymous said...

You could not pay me to play in the Missouri City Tournament. How can they get sanctioned to run tournaments every month?! I played in that tournament last year and it was the most poorly run, ineptly managed mess I had ever seen. The TD recorded the scores on her lap top when players came off the court and did not write them down on paper. Then, her lap top crashed. FUBAH

If you ask me, the current ranking system is just as much at fault for the crappy draws at 100 pointers as the high entry fees. When you can win 1 match in a major zone and pick up 125 or 150 points why would you play a 100 pointer where the only way you can even pick up 100 points is to win the whole thing. And don't tell me you should play for love of the game and to get the practice. How much tennis or you going to get out draws that seldom seem to have more than 8 people in draw, for 4.5 and 5.0 anyway. I personally miss the old system of rankings based on head to head results so that all matches have relevance regardless of what round of whatever tournament as long as it was USTA sanctioned.

Anonymous said...

My take on this is that if you are going for a state ranking then you should stick to MZ for points. If you just like the competition and don’t give a rat’s ass about rankings and seedings, then all power to you and just play the local ones. Bottom line is just go out there and have some fun and make friends.
Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

The points system is crap. I agree with the person who said that you could get 150+ pts for winning one round in a MZ. It makes all of the 100 pt tournaments mute. The W/L record should be used (either in conjunction with the points system, or by itself), which I think would get people to play some of the smaller tournaments. There were players who records upwards of 13-3 and 11-2 last year that didn't get to play in the MASTER's last year, while players who played 2 or 3 MZ tournaments who made 2nd round exits and had records of 3-5, or 4-4 that were invited to the MASTERS.

Bottom line, if people want to play for state ranking, and their W/L record is not good towards the end of the year, they would have to play some of the smaller tournaments to get their W/L record up, which might get more people to play, which eventually might lower the entry fees (if the reason they are going up is because no one is playing).

My apologies for the long winded post.

Anonymous said...

USTA Texas Section is doomed. They are their own down fall at the end. Mark my words.

Notradomous

Anonymous said...

i was thinking about organizing a sanctioned 100 points no-thrills tourney in houston for a low entry fee of 20 dollars per player including online fee. there would be no consolation, no t-shirts, no trophies, no food no drinks.

if this is of interest, where and when would you like to play?

in case you have access to low cost courts, that could further lower the price.

Anonymous said...

Dugas, you are right about the point system. I propose to revert to the old system:

400 points for masters and sectionals
300 points for major zones
200 points for small major zones
100 points for local events

but with a different distribution of the points:

Winner: 400
Finalist: 240
Semi-Finalist: 144
Quarter-Finalist: 72
Round of 16: 32
and so on....

Anonymous said...

Dugas sucks, beat somebody Dugas and you might feel better about yourself

to Mr. Anonymous... my brother and I were the ones that were 11-2 last year as a doubles team, so I think we won our share of matches last year. for anyone that wants to play, we welcome the challenge.

Anonymous said...

Dugas brothers, i did not look at your record but play some bigger tourneys then and try and beat some of the big boys then you can talk some of your shit about the format.

Anonymous said...

We had several good wins last year, most notably over Rothe/Hall early last year. They went on to the Master's last year and lost in the Finals. Victories over Moser/Kallus at Lost Forest, and Cornelius/Marin at Sectionals were a couple of other good matches.

Agreed, we did not travel much last year, very few players did. You will see us in the MZ's this year, just not in Abilene.

Hey Snapper Head Reader,

I wonder what the percentage break down is for tennis level for people that view this site is, I would suggest.
2.5 - 10%
3.0 - 20%
3.5 - 39%
4.0 - 25%
4.5 - 5%
4.5+ <1%
I wonder why this is? I guess Reader worship peaks at 3.5!!!

The USTA is a business and they want to make money, recession or no recession. Simple put, they are in the business to grow the game. Which is good for all them, and I guess this is good for everyone else too, I guess. All I know is I’ve have been playing these tournaments for about 10 years. I’ve seen the average cost of a tournament go from $12, with a lunch and shirt, to now its current high around $30-$35 with no shirt, no food,,,, nothing. Which means if I play for another 10 years the average price will be around $60!

This is the issue, we are not professionals, and while I hate it, we are all weekend hackers that happen to like to play the game. But I’m not made of money. And these tournaments (if you do good) take the whole weekend. Not to mention gas, and food. If you are not a good player well you are going to at best get 1 or 2 games and your done, $35 for 2 games. And that just plain sucks!

And these major zones,,,,, drive for 3 hours, pay $30 for an entry fee, get a hotel for $100, gas cost $50-70. Add in a $60 a year USTA membership for me and my wife to get that creap magazine.

Now add this little gem, I signed up for 2 tournaments last year with my wife. $30 each for singles, then about $20 each for doubles total $100 for each. Due to the hurricane and some other reason they were both cancelled,,,,,, I’M OUT $200,,,,,,, $200!!!!!! GONE ADIOS, RIGHT OUT OF MY POCKET!!!! All to grow the game. I’d like to see the salaries of all these USTA big wigs, not to mention all the perks they get from Wilson & Prince.

Well I don’t play many tournaments anymore. I do pick up games all the time, and my wallet doesn’t feel the pain, and I still have a great time. I do however take the money I would normally use playing tournaments and bought a club membership.

Club membership $120/month with many club extras versus USTA tournaments (2 per month for 1 person) avg. $150.

That’s enough from me. I’m going to the club I have a match set up, and then I’m hitting the Jacuzzi.

To the Dugas, who thinks that Rothe and Hall are some super stud team. The only reason they made the finals at Masters is the group they were in was a bunch of weak players. Plus they had to argue their way in with some rule about tiebreakers that does not exist. So nut up and travel and then you can say we beat some one.

If I didn't see the web address telling me this is a tennis blog, I would swear it was a gay dating site. Especially when it comes to this Reader guy everyone keeps praising. Anyone notice that he can't post without offering to stick his cock in some other guys mouth. Seriously, every post ends "why don't you have the balls to let me know your name so that I can come pound your ass and put my cock in your mouth". Does this guy actually play tennis? And what's up with this other guy that always follows up with a "yeah, you tell lord-of-your cock in some other guy's mouth. That laugh-out-loud funny. Man, I am falling out of my chair cause you said an ass and then stick your cock in some cereal. You made my day Andrew Dice Strings." Just once, post without mentioning cock.

And why doesn't this site let you edit your posts when you realize 2 seconds after posting that you made two spelling errors and two accidental omissions of key words, without which, your post is only half as funny and effective as it would have been. Too late now, but I did leave out the word "them", the ending " 's ", and a "pound" as well. Now Reader is going to attack my grammar and come at me with his cock.

Strange isn't it that Abilene MZ is only charging $28 for entry fee, but Mabry is charging $38.13 to enter their tournament for only 200 points. Complete BS to play Mabry, but the sad thing over 200 people signed up for Mabry which means other tournaments will raise their fees knowing people will continue to enter tournaments.

What is the deal with the added 13 cents as well?

Complete crap.

Anonymous said...

Q) "What is the deal with the added 13 cents as well?"
A) Court Fee

Anonymous said...

We all oughta go late 60s/early 70s on the USTA & start our own tour & actually have the lionshare of the entry money in each division go TO the winners & runner-ups instead of to the USTA. Now that, my friends, would be something to see.

Anonymous said...

The only thing that would do would be to provoke reckless sandbagging if the prize money actually amounted to anything. Entry fees should be standardized such as $20 for all tournaments without a t-shirt, $27 with a t-shirt, $15 for no-consolation. I really do think the idea of plopping down $38 for what will more than likely be 2 matches turns people away. Tournament draws are down across the board over the last year in both singles and doubles. I think it is sad. The smaller the draws get, the less interest I have in playing tournaments. It was a lot more fun 10 years ago. I also think the current ranking system turns people off. I did not like the old system but I now realize that rankings based on head to heads is better.

Anonymous said...

I agree about the tournaments becoming way too expensive. The women's draws (especially in the senior tournaments) are very small. The increased prices are certainly not going to draw MORE players. Forget the t-shirts - who needs or wants another t-shirt!!! Give me $5.00 less on the entry fee any day. I guess until we ALL stop playing them, the tournaments will not change.

Anonymous said...

The tournament fees will continue to go up in coming years. As long as there are at least 2 players in a division (MZ) a draw can be held. I don’t like the higher fees as much as the other person, but it is what it is. Unfortunately I have cut down considerably in my tournament participation as a direct result of higher fees. The 100 pts tourneys are going to disappear, given time. I remember for instance, Juneteenth was $10 not too long ago. Now they charge you $20 + the $3 online BS fee (still a good bargain compare to others).
I just don’t know where USTA Texas is going with this!

Anonymous said...

The main problem with rankings based on head to head results was that many times you couldn't even play someone ahead of you because they played the first half of the year (or just the Coke in many cases) & then just sat on their record half the year so no one could play them. You must promote getting out there & play. Period. Encouraging players to sit at home most of the year can't be advocated. Being caught/passed in the rankings by sitting at home is a good motivator to get back out there & put it on the line. Not sure what the real answer is but the USTA has got to stabilize these entry fees for at least a couple of years or it's gonna price itself out of business. I guess they figure that tennis players are the ones with money & can take the hit. That's not always the case. For many of us it takes a lot of reaaranging our schedules & actually losing work money to be able to play.

Dugas Bros. you might be chewing more than you can swallow with that last statement. I personally have watched Reader & Garg, and there ain’t no way in hell you guys can beat them day after day after day. Sorry my man, those are pure facts.

Did I say anything about us beating them? NO! I said that I would expect them to beat us, but if they didn't then they must have been having a bad day. What, do you not understand english or something?

I know English pretty good my man, but I also know you guys gonna get an ass whopping by them two in the magnitude of 6-0, 6-0. Beside, I’m on your side bro, but don’t push it.

I appreciate the support ("being on our side"). Sorry for the "English" comment. I'm just tired of people bashing others, when they've never seen them play, or have never been on the other side of the court from them. If I play well and I get double bageled, I'll go home happier than if I played like crap and the match was close.
