News Flash to Texas Tournaments...US in economic recession!
Any one else get their USTA book/schedule for 2009 and notice that nearly every tournament in the state raised their entry fee by at least $3 - $5? Please correct me if I am wrong, but would this not seem a strange time for tournaments to be looking to squeeze out extra money from entrants? What makes even less sense is that it is the smaller local type tournaments that will only draw a handful of players for each level anyway that are asking the most. $33 to participate in a draw of 5 people at the nearly-monthly Missouri City events at the oh-so-lovely craphole that is Lee LeClear? Please don't hate me but I think I will pass. And don't get me started on the price to play doubles. $31 bucks to get in a 100 point tourney and I only get 1 guaranteed match? Well that t-shirt better be made out of silk, or in Lord of the Strings case, hemp (just joking LOTS, we all love you...even if you are out to kick each and every one of our asses on and off the court). Anyway, it seems like tournament tennis here in Texas keeps on taking one turn for the worse after another and I honestly don't think the players are to blame. If you ask me, $25 tops for singles entry and $20 per player max for doubles. And don't force me to sign up via the internet and then charge me an extra $3 for making your job easier, Mr. Tournament Director. How's that for kicking off the New Year. If you are bored and have money to burn, don't forget Mabry is coming up shortly for the 200 point, likes-to-travel crowd or you can just blow a wad of cash out at Lee LeClear at the 100 pointer I ranted about earlier. I didn't get enough of a response to the idea of a challenge ladder or one day Houston Tourney Tennis Scene tournament so I will drop the idea for the time being. Now get to hitting.

Yea that just plain sucks. What do they think we are, made outta money? I guess we'll all have to start holing up 7 to a room to compensate.
I loved the hemp comment about LOTS. Very funny.
I agree with $25 tops for singles entry and $20 per player max for doubles. But we are not the Tournament Directors. I used to play the 100 pts. tourneys but now unfortunately as a direct result of price increases I’m only playing 200 and 400 pts. Tournaments.
kallus still sucks
Also don't forget but the price of gas will increase as it gets closer to summer. Do you really think $1.50 a gallon will last throughout summer?
I believe the tournament increase is because of the lack of players signing up now. So to make a profit with less players the simple solution is to increase entry fees to make up for less players.
Also it would be nice if the Texas Section of the USTA would finally pull their heads out of their asses. But I believe that would be a miracle as well.
JourneyMan,
What is your deal with Schmucker? Seems like you have him in every online poll lately. Did Schmucker beat you in a match or something?
I was just wondering.
I have no issue with Schmucker. If I have played him before it would have been in a league match, but I honestly can't remember. It just always sticks in my head that he wastes a lot of money on tournaments he decides not to go to. That's really the only thing about him I have dwelled on, though I agree his name has probably been in a high percentage of recent poll questions. Anyway, more power to him, I am sure he is a great guy.
With the low turn outs in the tournaments, they should abolish no-add, two-all BS anymore. Elect Journeyman for Secretary of Finance.
I was told that Goldberg, Foad, Kallus, Schmucker, Ronnie Johnson, Tim Pepper, and Herb Morton all got together for a hitting session that lasted 6 hours this past Saturday. If you guys do this every Saturday please let us know because I would like to join as well.
It was actually last Thursday, the 1st day of the New Year. They have been doing this for the last 3 years or so and it has become a New Year's day tradition.
That's not a bad idea. How about setting up some kind of bi-monthly free-for-all hitting session? It would be a good chance to play different players and get some practice. The logistics may be tough, but worth discussing.
Any suggestions?
practicing with these guys would only worsen your game
five.....five dollars.....five dollar foot longggggggg
Hitting with them will worsen your game? Pretty impressive those guys played for 6 hrs. From the list some pretty good players as well. I played Morton before in a tournament and he kicked my ass all over the court. If there is another hitting session please let us know I am in.
Why would it worsen your game? Because Kallus was involved? At least he will stick around and let you beat up on him for 6 hours unlike a few guys I could mention who fake an injury and go home if they are losing, even when it is a meaningless practice match.
You could not pay me to play in the Missouri City Tournament. How can they get sanctioned to run tournaments every month?! I played in that tournament last year and it was the most poorly run, ineptly managed mess I had ever seen. The TD recorded the scores on her lap top when players came off the court and did not write them down on paper. Then, her lap top crashed. FUBAH
If you ask me, the current ranking system is just as much at fault for the crappy draws at 100 pointers as the high entry fees. When you can win 1 match in a major zone and pick up 125 or 150 points why would you play a 100 pointer where the only way you can even pick up 100 points is to win the whole thing. And don't tell me you should play for love of the game and to get the practice. How much tennis or you going to get out draws that seldom seem to have more than 8 people in draw, for 4.5 and 5.0 anyway. I personally miss the old system of rankings based on head to head results so that all matches have relevance regardless of what round of whatever tournament as long as it was USTA sanctioned.
My take on this is that if you are going for a state ranking then you should stick to MZ for points. If you just like the competition and don’t give a rat’s ass about rankings and seedings, then all power to you and just play the local ones. Bottom line is just go out there and have some fun and make friends.
Nuff said.
The points system is crap. I agree with the person who said that you could get 150+ pts for winning one round in a MZ. It makes all of the 100 pt tournaments mute. The W/L record should be used (either in conjunction with the points system, or by itself), which I think would get people to play some of the smaller tournaments. There were players who records upwards of 13-3 and 11-2 last year that didn't get to play in the MASTER's last year, while players who played 2 or 3 MZ tournaments who made 2nd round exits and had records of 3-5, or 4-4 that were invited to the MASTERS.
Bottom line, if people want to play for state ranking, and their W/L record is not good towards the end of the year, they would have to play some of the smaller tournaments to get their W/L record up, which might get more people to play, which eventually might lower the entry fees (if the reason they are going up is because no one is playing).
My apologies for the long winded post.
USTA Texas Section is doomed. They are their own down fall at the end. Mark my words.
Notradomous
i was thinking about organizing a sanctioned 100 points no-thrills tourney in houston for a low entry fee of 20 dollars per player including online fee. there would be no consolation, no t-shirts, no trophies, no food no drinks.
if this is of interest, where and when would you like to play?
in case you have access to low cost courts, that could further lower the price.
Dugas, you are right about the point system. I propose to revert to the old system:
400 points for masters and sectionals
300 points for major zones
200 points for small major zones
100 points for local events
but with a different distribution of the points:
Winner: 400
Finalist: 240
Semi-Finalist: 144
Quarter-Finalist: 72
Round of 16: 32
and so on....
Dugas sucks, beat somebody Dugas and you might feel better about yourself
to Mr. Anonymous... my brother and I were the ones that were 11-2 last year as a doubles team, so I think we won our share of matches last year. for anyone that wants to play, we welcome the challenge.
Oh my lord. Welcome to the chat line Lord of the Strings. That’s some funny shit man.
Dugas brothers, i did not look at your record but play some bigger tourneys then and try and beat some of the big boys then you can talk some of your shit about the format.
We had several good wins last year, most notably over Rothe/Hall early last year. They went on to the Master's last year and lost in the Finals. Victories over Moser/Kallus at Lost Forest, and Cornelius/Marin at Sectionals were a couple of other good matches.
Agreed, we did not travel much last year, very few players did. You will see us in the MZ's this year, just not in Abilene.
Go Dugas Brothers Go....

Every time LOTS posts, you pay him some tribute. Why don't you just suck him off and be done with it?
Dugas, good win over Kallus. maybe you guys could play on his 3.5 womens team. Come on beat somebody then trash the format.
Hey be nice to Kallus. He is my friend.
Mr. Anonymous, Would you like to be that somebody that we beat?
To 11:52
Reader does not know me, I am not nearly in his level - I have seen him play.
The point I am making is that it is not necessary for you to cum all over yourself everytime he posts. Try to post something original instead of being up his ass.
Why can the people who post in this blog never stay on topic? It always turns into a bashing of someone, usually Kallus.
Does anyone have a good tennis string recommendation? When I was younger I broke strings quite often and got use to playing with string combinations such as kevlar and synthetic gut (or similar products), but I would like to try something different for a change.
Hey Snapper Head Reader,
I wonder what the percentage break down is for tennis level for people that view this site is, I would suggest.
2.5 - 10%
3.0 - 20%
3.5 - 39%
4.0 - 25%
4.5 - 5%
4.5+ <1%
I wonder why this is? I guess Reader worship peaks at 3.5!!!
All hale Reader, all hale Reader, all hale Reader.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, SNAPPER HEAD!!!!
The USTA is a business and they want to make money, recession or no recession. Simple put, they are in the business to grow the game. Which is good for all them, and I guess this is good for everyone else too, I guess. All I know is I’ve have been playing these tournaments for about 10 years. I’ve seen the average cost of a tournament go from $12, with a lunch and shirt, to now its current high around $30-$35 with no shirt, no food,,,, nothing. Which means if I play for another 10 years the average price will be around $60!
This is the issue, we are not professionals, and while I hate it, we are all weekend hackers that happen to like to play the game. But I’m not made of money. And these tournaments (if you do good) take the whole weekend. Not to mention gas, and food. If you are not a good player well you are going to at best get 1 or 2 games and your done, $35 for 2 games. And that just plain sucks!
And these major zones,,,,, drive for 3 hours, pay $30 for an entry fee, get a hotel for $100, gas cost $50-70. Add in a $60 a year USTA membership for me and my wife to get that creap magazine.
Now add this little gem, I signed up for 2 tournaments last year with my wife. $30 each for singles, then about $20 each for doubles total $100 for each. Due to the hurricane and some other reason they were both cancelled,,,,,, I’M OUT $200,,,,,,, $200!!!!!! GONE ADIOS, RIGHT OUT OF MY POCKET!!!! All to grow the game. I’d like to see the salaries of all these USTA big wigs, not to mention all the perks they get from Wilson & Prince.
Well I don’t play many tournaments anymore. I do pick up games all the time, and my wallet doesn’t feel the pain, and I still have a great time. I do however take the money I would normally use playing tournaments and bought a club membership.
Club membership $120/month with many club extras versus USTA tournaments (2 per month for 1 person) avg. $150.
That’s enough from me. I’m going to the club I have a match set up, and then I’m hitting the Jacuzzi.
To the Dugas, who thinks that Rothe and Hall are some super stud team. The only reason they made the finals at Masters is the group they were in was a bunch of weak players. Plus they had to argue their way in with some rule about tiebreakers that does not exist. So nut up and travel and then you can say we beat some one.
Ha,,,, that is funny as hell,,,, READER the SNAPPER HEAD!!!
HA HA HA HA,,,,,, how true it is. I am going to split my side laughing!!!
I'm starting to think that idiot calling himself Tennis God, is actually READER himself!!!
Try Luxilon Alu Power string.
Yea, Jr., your daddy is in the house, and yes, calling you Snapper Head is funny!!!!
God of the Strings has spoken.
You guys need to stick to your day time jobs and stop picking on each other like little boys. Grow up for crying out loud.
To January 9, 2009 2:13 PM
Why don't you post your name pussy so I can rip your fucking head off and shove it up your ass the next time I see on the court.
in use to use the luxilon supersense monotec. i use to break sythetic gut every 8 games. but it takes me 4 months to break these. great feel and control.
now i use luxilon alu power rough. they are also durable and gives me more pop on the ball. great power and control.
Hey leave Dugas brothers alone. They are my friends.

You can't rip anyone's head off - you are too busy sucking up to LOTS
Definition of "suck up"
To support slavishly every opinion or suggestion of a superior
Thomas Reader a/k/a Lord of the Strings. A 4.5 player from San Antonio that has the game to back up his mouth
If I didn't see the web address telling me this is a tennis blog, I would swear it was a gay dating site. Especially when it comes to this Reader guy everyone keeps praising. Anyone notice that he can't post without offering to stick his cock in some other guys mouth. Seriously, every post ends "why don't you have the balls to let me know your name so that I can come pound your ass and put my cock in your mouth". Does this guy actually play tennis? And what's up with this other guy that always follows up with a "yeah, you tell lord-of-your cock in some other guy's mouth. That laugh-out-loud funny. Man, I am falling out of my chair cause you said an ass and then stick your cock in some cereal. You made my day Andrew Dice Strings." Just once, post without mentioning cock.
And why doesn't this site let you edit your posts when you realize 2 seconds after posting that you made two spelling errors and two accidental omissions of key words, without which, your post is only half as funny and effective as it would have been. Too late now, but I did leave out the word "them", the ending " 's ", and a "pound" as well. Now Reader is going to attack my grammar and come at me with his cock.
The previous blog was for January 12, 2009 5:30 PM
It is a tennis blog but some dick for brains thinks that I'm LOTS suck up, which I ain't. I, along with lots of others bloggers just like to read the shit he writes in here.
I thought this site was about tennis, but I guess it is more about who can write the most junior high school remarks. I almost feel like I am back in sixth grade again after reading these pathetic remarks.
Sounds like a lot of you NEED lots and lots of therapy.
Amen to the last blog.
Dugas bros. and Kallus are idiots
Support your USTA Texas Section. 2 MZ's are coming up in the month of February. Abilene (Feb 6-8) and SAPTA-Mercedes-Benz of Boerne (Feb-20-22). Good luck to all who are playing.
Dugas bros. are the new "Kallus" on this blog. Dugas bros. suck.
Hey fellows, lets keep this civil. This is a tennis blog afterall so no personal attacks on anybody please.
I am talking tennis.
And I say the Snapper Head is over rated.
If he had game as big as his fat flagellating mouth than he would be more than a threat. But noooooo, he spends too much time crushing lower ranked players then bragging about it. He knows what I mean. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll give the Snapper Head some credit as he has some good strokes and he has come a long way. But he knows that every time he stands up to plays his own level, he gets crushed.
Ha Ha,,,,,,, I crush you like a little grape.
So look out all you 3.5 peasants you will have a really leader soon,,,,,, a real TENNIS GOD!!!!!!!
Oh,,,,, and I won’t talk about sticking my, you know what in every fruit loop. That is just plain weird.
Tennis God has spoken
God of Tennis, is the first initial of your name, Sarosh?
Strange isn't it that Abilene MZ is only charging $28 for entry fee, but Mabry is charging $38.13 to enter their tournament for only 200 points. Complete BS to play Mabry, but the sad thing over 200 people signed up for Mabry which means other tournaments will raise their fees knowing people will continue to enter tournaments.
What is the deal with the added 13 cents as well?
Complete crap.
Q) "What is the deal with the added 13 cents as well?"
A) Court Fee
We all oughta go late 60s/early 70s on the USTA & start our own tour & actually have the lionshare of the entry money in each division go TO the winners & runner-ups instead of to the USTA. Now that, my friends, would be something to see.
The only thing that would do would be to provoke reckless sandbagging if the prize money actually amounted to anything. Entry fees should be standardized such as $20 for all tournaments without a t-shirt, $27 with a t-shirt, $15 for no-consolation. I really do think the idea of plopping down $38 for what will more than likely be 2 matches turns people away. Tournament draws are down across the board over the last year in both singles and doubles. I think it is sad. The smaller the draws get, the less interest I have in playing tournaments. It was a lot more fun 10 years ago. I also think the current ranking system turns people off. I did not like the old system but I now realize that rankings based on head to heads is better.
I agree about the tournaments becoming way too expensive. The women's draws (especially in the senior tournaments) are very small. The increased prices are certainly not going to draw MORE players. Forget the t-shirts - who needs or wants another t-shirt!!! Give me $5.00 less on the entry fee any day. I guess until we ALL stop playing them, the tournaments will not change.
The tournament fees will continue to go up in coming years. As long as there are at least 2 players in a division (MZ) a draw can be held. I don’t like the higher fees as much as the other person, but it is what it is. Unfortunately I have cut down considerably in my tournament participation as a direct result of higher fees. The 100 pts tourneys are going to disappear, given time. I remember for instance, Juneteenth was $10 not too long ago. Now they charge you $20 + the $3 online BS fee (still a good bargain compare to others).
I just don’t know where USTA Texas is going with this!
The main problem with rankings based on head to head results was that many times you couldn't even play someone ahead of you because they played the first half of the year (or just the Coke in many cases) & then just sat on their record half the year so no one could play them. You must promote getting out there & play. Period. Encouraging players to sit at home most of the year can't be advocated. Being caught/passed in the rankings by sitting at home is a good motivator to get back out there & put it on the line. Not sure what the real answer is but the USTA has got to stabilize these entry fees for at least a couple of years or it's gonna price itself out of business. I guess they figure that tennis players are the ones with money & can take the hit. That's not always the case. For many of us it takes a lot of reaaranging our schedules & actually losing work money to be able to play.
Where is our smelly Snapper Head leader!
He will be in Abilene MZ next month enforcing the laws ass whopping in tennis.
you were doing so well staying on subject until the last 2 postings. let's try and get thru several posts without acting like 7th graders.
That kind of talk is BORING dude.
Abilene MZ (the first MZ of the year) dealine is on Monday Jan. 26. Don't miss out!
Why do I need to drive 7 hrs and pay a tournament fee, when we could kick your ass here in Houston for free?
In fact, why don't you just pay me the fee you were going to put towards Abilene, and we'll chalk it up to a lesson for you.
Also, I haven't checked today, but there was only 1 4.5 mens doubles team signed up for Abilene yesterday. Just not a draw I'd like to drive 7 hrs for. Don't worry though, we'll be in San Antonio in February.
Go Dugas Brothers Go...
I think someone got their 7th grade ego hurt, and is lashing out. Why don't you get out from behind your computer and let's settle your little insecurity on the court? Or do you not have the balls? We'll take on anybody; 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, we don't care. If we get beat then so be it, you were better that day. We'll learn from it and move on to the next match. It's pretty easy to call out somebody when your name is not displayed. Coward.
Dugas beat Kallus in doubles. Now thats an impressive win.
Kallus oops i mean Dugas bros, i have never laughed so hard in my life. "take on any 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5" you guys provide a level of comedy here that i or many others have rarely experienced. in the reality of it all you mean any 3.5 to 4.0. Advise. You should stop posting here because you guys are getting "hammered"
Dugas bros. are solid 4.5 doubles, no need to go the "u r 3.5/4.0" route. Is Kallus even playing tennis anymore? I don't quite get why you keep ragging on him when I don't recall him ever boasting about any self-proclaimed successes. 90% of the guys on this blog have never achieved shit in the realm of tournament tennis. Yet everyone is so tough cause they don't have to back it up with a name. We all suck.
Amen to the last blogger.
Isn't Red the best doubles player?
Dugas bros let your racquets do all the talking. No need to get down to other bloggers levels. I’ve seen you in action and you guys are pretty good players. Your Win-Loss record will speak louder than anything you have to say here.
ABILENE ADULT MAJOR ZONE dealine is today at 11:59 PM. Don't forget to sign up.
Red the best doubles player. Please how can someone that weighs 300 pounds be the best doubles player? Red has a reputation of stealing as well so if you are around him make sure you are holding onto your wallet.
Next time you are in Tennis Express just ask Brad Blume about Red.
inquiring minds want to know. details please...
The Snapper Head will steal you blind. Be aware!!!!
recession must be hitting him hard or he's just that type of person.
In my opinion, the "Babalot Hurricane Pro" is some of the best and most durable strings I've ever played with.
No way! Reader had no gay insults?I can't believe it!Hey,as much as I hate the guy,Reader and Amit would beat the shit out of the Dugas brothers. And it wouldn't be just that day that they were the "better players". They would beat the shit out of you every single day.The sad reality,is that my partner and I got our asses handed to us by Reader and Regmund 6-0 6-1 after Reader had consumed at least a six pack of beer.Sorry, but they would beat ya'll every time.
watch out, Red might snake your "Babalot Hurricane Pro" strings
Whatever Dugas, Kallus just had an off day when you beat him. He is is a much better doubles player
Red took a lot of racquets and I mean a lot from Tennis Express and Brad Blume called around Houston to different tennis clubs to let them know so they would not employ him. Lets just say Red will never walk inside Tennis Express again.
Dugas bros suck!!!!!!! go kallus!!!!!
There has to be a lot more to that story. Red does some shady things but no way in hell he STOLE rackets from tennis express. Give me a break. Sounds like he needs to sue you anonymous for libel.
red once stole a match from me.
who pays when he takes a girl out on a date? lol...sorry for that dumb joke!
WHAT?? No one has noticed Foad's dual entry to the Abilene tourny? Looks like he wants to win a couple trophies....4.0 AND 4.5...
Dugas bros are arogant pricks!!!!!!
I'm in the 4.5 draw....I saw Foad in it and thought he must have been bumped up...I guess not
Red is crooked and that thing at the Tennis Express store really happened. I would not trust him with my water bottle. I worked there during that period and I know first hand.
is red still living at home with his parents? he probably steals food at the dinner table.
OK now, what is that last comment has to do with tennis? Please keep personal attacks out of this blog.
let's vote. who in 4.5 is the
ugliest
prettiest
fatest
thinnest
pretentious
modest
player?
Keep personal attacks from this blog???? Come on where have you been. This blog is all about personal attacks.
Regarding Red why defend him if he stole from Tennis Express? Isn't Tennis Express part of the Houston tennis scene as well? Brad Blume has helped out the local Houston tennis scene and sponsors Fall Fest tournament in October.
Isnt Brad Blume Gay? No wonder his prices are so high. I remember when he had a shack at the Westchase Ranch. All of a sudden he's plastered his ads all over every tennis magazine.Brad is supposedly a good 4.5 can anyone comment on that?
On other news anyone plan on playing Lost Forest next month? We should get all the Tournament Bloggers to enter for bragging rights. Best 4.5 in Houston has to be either Jochen or Sarosh.
Houston Tennis 4.0
So what if Brad Blume is gay? Houston has a large gay population and quite of few are pretty good tennis players.
Best 4.5 players in Houston my picks.
Tim Green
Chris Hunckler
Jochen Moser
Phong Regent
Greg Schmucker
Danny Vu
John Griffin
If they would play 4.5 the best players would be Aadrian Hasker,Ted P.and off course both Odion,Omon would be tough competition. NONE of these players have anything to gain by playing 4.5 Tournaments so I guess its a mild point.
4.5 players,
ugliest - Dennis Hiilsmeier
good lookin - Alejandro Sanchez
fatest - Daniel Kallus
thinnest - Tim Green
pretentious - SaRoach
modest - Chris Hunckler
fattest - Chris Leach
4.5 players (take 2),
Ugliest - Dennis Hiilsmeier
Good lookin - Alejandro Sanchez
Fastest - Daniel Kallus
Thinnest - Tim Green
Pretentious - SaRoach
Modest - Chris Hunckler
Fattest - Chris Leach
I noticed the Dugas brothers haven't commented on a previous post stating that they would get their asses handed to them by Reader and Garg. Reader and Reagmund would kill you guys. So Reader and Garg would f--king destroy you! You guys were the ones that said you would take on any 4.5 5.0 or 5.5 team and if you lost they would be the better players that day. THAT'S where you f--ked up. Every day you would get abused by these two. Any comments Dugas bros?
Tennis Express is my favorite tennis store, only if i can't get it at Academy. It's the best tennis store in the US. Who cares if the owner is gay. he creates jobs and contributes to charity. who cares about Red and why would someone defend that scumbag. all i hear about him are bad things.

Journeyman could you please change the thread. Lets talk about some upcoming tournaments.
We've never met Reader or Garg, nor have we seen them play, but I've read a lot about them on this blog, and since they are in the top 5 in 5.0 in both singles and doubles, I would expect that they would win if we played them, otherwise I'd say they were probably having a bad day. Nevertheless, we wouldn't mind playing them to see how we do.
yea, good luck with that Dugas! whatever!
Dugas Bros. you might be chewing more than you can swallow with that last statement. I personally have watched Reader & Garg, and there ain’t no way in hell you guys can beat them day after day after day. Sorry my man, those are pure facts.
Did I say anything about us beating them? NO! I said that I would expect them to beat us, but if they didn't then they must have been having a bad day. What, do you not understand english or something?
I know English pretty good my man, but I also know you guys gonna get an ass whopping by them two in the magnitude of 6-0, 6-0. Beside, I’m on your side bro, but don’t push it.
I appreciate the support ("being on our side"). Sorry for the "English" comment. I'm just tired of people bashing others, when they've never seen them play, or have never been on the other side of the court from them. If I play well and I get double bageled, I'll go home happier than if I played like crap and the match was close.
